History of the Department

This process dates back to the end of the late 60s of the last century when a computing center was created at the initiative of the Department of Automation at the Institute (Kyiv Technological Institute of Light Industry). The center’s hardware initially consisted of "Mir" and "Nairi" computers.

In 1972, for wider use of computer technology in the educational process and in conducting scientific research, a group of young, promising teachers was selected from the staff of the Department of Automation, from whom, in accordance with the Order of the Ministry of Higher Education of Ukraine, the Department of Computer Technology and Applied Mathematics was formed.

Continuous work was done to increase the computing capacity of the Department. EU-type machines appeared. The Department was constantly working to attract young professionals to teaching work.

In 1992, under his leadership a new specialty was opened - "Systems of Automated Design", which in 1994 was renamed as "Information Technology of Design". The first computer class of the Department had only 10 personal computers.

It should be noted that since 1992, the Department of Computer Engineering and Applied Mathematics began to cooperate with other degree-granting departments. Especially close cooperation is observed with the Departments of Technology and Design of Garments and Leather Products. This integration of collective efforts made it possible to significantly raise the level of coursework and diploma projects due to the use of modern information technology. This cooperation continues and develops even today.

In 1998, the Department of Computing and Applied Mathematics was structurally reorganized. Two departments were formed on its basis – the Department of Design Information Technology and the Department of Informatics.

The Department of Design Information Technology became part of the structure of the Faculty of the Light Industry Technology.

A new computer lab was opened at the Department of Design Information Technology. It had 20 personal computers combined into a local computer network of the "client-server" type.

In 2000 the second computer lab for 20 workstations equipped with modern computers and licensed software was created at the Department. The Department was accredited to IV level by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and received the opportunity to train masters in the specialty “Design Information Technology”.

The Department continues active cooperation with the Institute of Cybernetics and Institute of Mathematics of Ukraine. It was actively involved as part of the International Academy of Computer Science and Systems in the design of qualification tests and control tests in the direction of computer sciences.

Due to the development of a global computer network Internet, the Department is working on the creation of its website to improve the level of presentation of the University. This work became a logical continuation of the annual competitions of webpages held at the Department.

In 2018, the Department was renamed the Department of Computer Science.
