General Information

The educational and professional program “Chemical technologies for the production of medicines and medical supplies”, implemented at the Department of Applied Ecology, Technology of Polymers and Chemical Fibers of the Faculty of Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Technologies, is aimed at training specialists who can use knowledge and practical skills in the field of chemical technologies and engineering, in particular regarding the processing technologies of polymer and composite materials, in the production of medicines and medical supplies; mastering professional knowledge of design and implementation of chemical-technological processes, operation of technological equipment and production systems, assessment and quality control of finished products.

The relevance of training specialists under the educational and professional program CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE PRODUCTION OF MEDICINES AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES” is due to the need for specialists who have relevant knowledge and skills not only in the field of industrial pharmacy but are also familiar with the basics of chemical technologies of polymer and composite materials, know their main nomenclature and properties, possess methods of control and assessment of the quality of raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products.

In pharmaceutical practice, polymer and composite materials are widely used as packaging materials for medicines; excipients for the creation of various dosage forms; polymers of directed biological action (for example, prolongators). The variety of polymer materials, their complex chemical structure, and the need for accurate data on the behaviour of plastics in contact with packaged products — all require careful research when selecting packaging material for pharmaceuticals. Synthetic polymers are gaining more and more importance in the creation of new dosage forms and already known therapeutic agents as substitutes for wax, fats, and oils. Synthetic polymers occupy a significant place among excipients. Polymers are also used as pharmacological (therapeutic) preparations in the form of medications or components of medicinal compositions and forms (surgical threads, anti-hernia meshes, substitutes for elements of bone tissue, joints, tendons, and dental materials).

The purpose of the educational and professional program is to train specialists who have deep knowledge, as well as basic and professional competencies in the field of chemical technology of medicines and medical supplies.

The graduate should possess knowledge in the field of chemical technologies for medicines and medical supplies, operation of technological equipment and production systems, including technologies for the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients and medicinal products, in particular with the use of polymer and composite materials, the technology of pharmaceutical preparations, development of new technologies and improvement of the existing ones, conducting quality control of raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products, and can also organize, improve the design and management of technological processes for the production of medicines and medical supplies.

The emphasis is placed on the formation and development of professional competencies for solving tasks in the field of chemical technologies of medicines and medical supplies, active involvement of students in scientific fundamental and applied research into obtaining the medicinal substances and active pharmaceutical ingredients; design of chemical and pharmaceutical products. It is important to develop professional self-improvement, and creative thinking in the search for new medicines and medical supplies and technologies for their production, in particular with the use of polymer and composite materials.

After completing their studies, graduates can continue their studies at KNUTD to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Specialized educational and scientific laboratories and scientific circles have been created at the departments, under the leadership of the leading teachers of the Department, and doctors of science to ensure a high level of specialist training. Students annually participate in national and international scientific conferences of young scientists and students, publish scientific articles, and take part in Olympiads in professional courses.

The Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment “Additive Manufacturing Technology Centre” (3D printing) functions on the basis of the Department of Applied Ecology, Technology of Polymers and Chemical Fibers.

Students have the opportunity to participate in the implementation of scientific research works, course and diploma projects.

Studies at the University

Training is conducted by highly educated specialists with scientific authority and extensive work experience both in production and in project organizations. The laboratories of the Faculty are equipped with modern devices and equipment, which makes it possible to consolidate the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice.

The Modular Environment of the Educational Process of KNUTD successfully operates at the University, providing students with the opportunity to independently use electronic educational resources, including educational and methodical materials in academic courses (lecture notes, methodical instructions, textbooks, study aids, presentation materials, etc.), prepare reports, do tests, ask teachers questions on the forums and get answers to them, learn about the schedule of classes, consultations, exams, study results, and much more.

The Faculty of Chemical and Biopharmaceutical Technologies of KNUTD provides a postgraduate program in the specialty 161 Chemical Technologies and Engineering, allowing defending a thesis and obtaining a PhD degree.

Employment

Professional activities in the field of chemical technologies and engineering.

The program provides in-depth theoretical, special practical, and research training in the field of chemical technology and engineering, and opens up prospects for internships and employment at modern enterprises in chemical, pharmaceutical, food, and processing industries; disposal and reuse of waste. The graduate is suitable for employment in educational institutions, and research and design institutes.
