Department of Technology and design of sewing products was established in 1944 as the Department of garment production. Since 1944 till 1947 the department was headed by Dybrenko M. Since 1947 till 1954 the department was reorganized into the Department of clothing and footwear manufacturing, the head of which was originally Topolyanskny N. and then Afanasiev O. Since 1954 till 1959 there was garment production department, the Head of Department Orlov I.
In the period since 1959 till 1981 the department of clothing technology was created, in 1963 the department of clothing design appeared. Heads of the department of clothing technology during that period were:

Since 1981 till 1988 based on existing Department of clothing technology, Department of garment production was established. Since 1982 till 1988 the head of the department - Ph.D. prof. Jakub V. During 1988-1996 department was named - Technology of sewing products, the head was Ph.D. prof. Mihaltso I.
Since 1996, on the basis of the Technology of sewing products and Clothing design departments Technology and design of sewing products department was created. Since then the Department was headed by Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, PhD, Professor, Academician Mykola Bereznenko. Since 2003 the Head of the Department Dr. Sc., Professor Sergey Bereznenko.

The scientific school:
Research work is carried out in the laboratory and on modern equipment of companies, carrying out budget and economic contracts and at the expense of the second half of the teachers’ working day.
The main areas of research work of the department: development of properties of modern materials database (supervisor: prof. Bereznenko M.), development of energy-saving technologies for making clothes (supervisor: prof. Bereznenko S.), the creation of items for individual protection from environmental influences (supervisor: PhD. Moyseyenko S.).

With the assistance of the department basic researches were performed, new technologies for polymer materials and chemical fibers manufacture were created. The results of this work allowed the member of the department prof. Bereznenko M. obtained in 2007 the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology. For the national economy professor Bereznenko M. with a group of colleagues had made important scientific research work, which is dedicated to the creation of new materials and products from local raw materials (flax, hemp, wool). The results of these developments are introduced in the work of a number of enterprises in.
The department annually performs research work funded by the state budget. The agreements on scientific cooperation in the field of development and application of nanotechnology in light industry and in the field of microbiological testing of textile materials are also performed.
The department has agreements on scientific and technical activities with various organizations of Ukraine.

Formation and development of general and professional competences in the field of textile and light industry, aimed at getting knowledge, skills, abilities and capabilities in the design and manufacturing of garments and research activities for the development of innovative technologies of clothing production. |
Learning outcomes: |
1. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of innovative technologies of sewing production: to know innovative methods of garments designing, new materials for products, their properties and features of technology application, trends of improving technology and making clothes and ways of creating new sewing equipment. The level of this knowledge should be higher than basic, necessary not only for work in the traditional areas of application and to conduct research on modern science field. 2. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of qualitilogy of garment production, which is related to the technology and design of sewing articles. The ability to use this knowledge for professional use, when introducing into manufacture competitive sewing products, to carry certification of products and quality systems production. 3. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of safety and basics of civil protection related to technology and design of sewing articles to ensure optimal conditions in the workplace, proper sanitary and hygienic level of work and maintain high standards of environmental protection. 4. The ability to demonstrate research skills in professional field: competence in planning, design and execution of research in the field of sewing production from the stage setting the problem to the evaluation and review of results, including the ability to make plans and programs of research, prepare specific tasks for performers choose the right equipment and procedures to implement the rights on intellectual property, conduct examination of research works. 5. The ability to demonstrate experimental skills in professional field to test hypotheses and research of technological phenomena: knowledge of experimental methods and procedure of experiments, their independent performance or the ability to lead a team of employees on position of the leader. This means the ability to ask the correct questions, knowledge of non-standard equipment, planning, making schemes and carrying experiment, data collection and analysis, including careful error analysis and critical evaluation of the results. 6. Ability to demonstrate practical skills in professional field (pre-diploma practice), which includes the ability to evaluate and justify the use of the latest technology and the best modes of making garments, ensuring a proper quality level of products manufacturing, the use of resource-saving environmentally friendly technologies, including the ability to manufacture products of any range due to industrial processing technology. 7. Mastering good working skills to work individually and independently (individual work and performance of the degree project) or in a group (laboratory works, including leadership skills in their implementation), the ability to get results within a limited time with a focus on professional integrity and prevention of plagiarism. 8. The ability to demonstrate basic knowledge on special subjects chosen by the student: optimization of conformity in the sewing industry, analysis methodology of work processes for clothing production - in order to specialize and develop interdisciplinary approaches. 9.Ability to use automated means of graphic implementation of art and design solutions of models, modern automated methods for design of pre-production processes, computerized design techniques processes, and develop technical task for the creation of software for technological processes of garments designing and manufacturing. Ability to use automated control systems for the purpose of monitoring and management in a corporate network, using information searching systems for monitoring the innovations concerning the manufacturing of apparel industry products. 10. Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the basics of professional communication and marketing: understanding of the state tasks in the production of sewing articles, implementation of forecasting and planning activities as production manager, coordination of the work of the enterprise, institution or organization to compliance with current legislation, standards, rules and regulations, focus on the socio-political life and active public position. 11. Ability to demonstrate cognitive abilities and skills in the professional field, skills of scientific material presentation at the conference, its argumentation in writing and orally with the ability to execute a scientific publication. 12. Skill in possession of one foreign language, including special terminology for literature and patent search, ability to communicate with foreign specialists in this branch, representatives of foreign trade companies, competent representation of foreign language texts of the reports at international conferences, speeches on professional issues, scientific publications . |

All groups of students studying for the qualification of Bachelor assigned to the curators that familiarize students with normative and methodological materials, that regulate the organization of educational process by the credit-module system; provide group and individual consultations for the most efficient development of individual educational plans; protect the educational interests of students; help young people to participate in the cultural life of the capital. Cultural events are introduced, theaters, exhibitions, museums and galleries are regularly visited. There are a lot of clubs in KNUTD where students can find themselves in creative activities, sports and theater clubs.

Graduates of the department can work at enterprises of the sewing industry in Ukraine and abroad, holding the post of presidents of the company, directors, chief engineers, engineers, design engineers, quality and standardization engineers. Engineer-constructor who has specialization "Examination of processes and products of sewing manufacture" can be employed as: a leading specialist in the department of technical control of sewing production; quality manager; experts in centres and testing laboratories who perform an examination of the goods for consumer rights protection; expert or hear in the laboratories of the State Customs Service of Ukraine, the State Tax Service of Ukraine; expert, researcher or manager in the centres of certification of products and services; commodity expert in manufacturing and in the trade network; manager of sales and purchases of goods; expert auditor.
In addition, students who do well in the scientific field, have the possibility of further professional growth as an intern researcher, researcher, engineer-researcher, postgraduate, teacher-trainee, assistant, and after a successful thesis defence - work as an associate professor and professor.

There are post-graduate courses at the faculty of technology, service and fashion KNUTD on the specialty 05.18.19 «Technology of textile materials, sewing and knitted products», so the students of the Department of technology and design of sewing products have a possibility to receive postgraduate training, to protect the dissertation and to get the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences.

The work with the future masters starts with 2nd or 3rd courses. To do this, the department has two research and practice groups to work with involving students and first year as well. The work in scientific groups allows students to navigate their own research interests and scientific subjects, developed at the department to gain experience in carrying out independent research.

While studying at the university, students can obtain military occupation and the second higher education, in particular, economic or financial area (since the 5th term, with discounts for payment) as well as complete Master’s degree and Postgraduate’s degree program.
For the first time in the practice of the university, department launched the scientific and practical seminars for industry workers, teachers and students with participation of leading foreign companies «Lainiere de Picardie» (France), «Freudenberg», «HANSEL Textil», «KUFNER »(Germany),« NOVATEX UA »(Czech Republic),« CAMELA »(Poland) and others on new materials and technologies for the manufacture of clothing.
The department maintains close scientific relations and trains students and postgraduate students for different countries, including Moldova, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, China, Poland, Vietnam, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Germany.
Teachers, postgraduate students are engaged in research on modern topics, including the development of resource-saving technologies of fibrous materials of tree bark, natural and artificial leather, creation of multifunctional materials and products, including health care of personnel and the environmental protection. Researches in the application of nanotechnology in the manufacture of products for various purposes were initiated.
Teachers, postgraduate students participate in inter-regional and international conferences, scientific and teaching seminars, maintain close relations with the Moscow State University of Design and Technologies, St. Petersburg State University of Technologies and Design, Ivanovo Textile Academy, Kishinev State University, Technical University of Iasi, Polytechnic Radomski (Poland), Dresden Textile University, technical University of Liberec (Czech Republic), Tashkent Institute of textile and light industry (Uzbekistan), University of Turkey and other leading universities of the world and cooperate with colleges and technical schools that are part of a scientific and methodical complex of the university .
The department conducted the International Seminar "World of applied materials on Vilene InSights», where advanced materials for the manufacture of high quality clothing were demonstrated, a round table on the basis of the company "Volodarka" was held.
