A LECTURE “UKRAINIAN AND EUROPEAN MODERN AND MODERNISM: ASPECTS OF INTERACTIONS”

On April 5, 2024, within the framework of Design Week, an online lecture “UKRAINIAN AND EUROPEAN MODERN AND MODERNISM: ASPECTS OF INTERACTIONS” by Doctor of Philosophical Sciences, Professor, Professor of the Department of Graphic Design, Oleksandra Kolisnyk.

The lecture was attended by students and teachers of KNUTD faculties and institutes, as well as students and colleagues from various Ukrainian universities and participants of Ukrainian Design and Innovation Week (UDIW).

The lecturer spoke about the specifics of modernity and modernism, two powerful trends and tendencies in European and Ukrainian societies of the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, which demonstrated the desire of the brightest representatives of this time to create not only new forms of art, but also philosophy and social organisation that would contribute to the formation of a world of new values, including such features as urbanisation, individualisation, technologisation, and the search for new forms of personal freedom.

Particular attention was paid to the influence of Art Nouveau and Modernism on Ukrainian art of the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century.

Using specific examples of the works by F. Krychevskyi, I. Miasoiedov, V. Maksymovych, H. Narbut, K. Malevych, O. Bohomazov and other prominent Ukrainian artists, the lecturer showed variants of manifestation of modern and modernism in the art of that period in Ukraine.

At the end of the lecture, attention was paid to the differences between modernism and avant-garde. The lecturer emphasised the ambiguity of the allegories of these two movements and focused on the outrageousness and such a feature of avant-garde as "anti-behaviour".
