History

The Department of Applied Mechanics and Machines was established by a decision of the Board of studies and rector`s order № 175 from 24.09.2015, by union of the Department of Machinery and Light Industry and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. It was entrusted to conduct studying for Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering of Applied Mechanics and Industrial engineering`s fields and Masters of Mechanical engineering`s field of the specialization "Light industry and consumer services."

The Department`s history started simultaneously with the history of the university in 1930, when the Department of Strength of Materials, Machine Components, Technical Mechanics and Construction was established for training of mechanics in the field of shoe and leather manufacturing. The Department was headed by associate professor V. Petin. In those years the Department was a part of the Mechanical and Shoe Faculty.

During evacuation years (1941-1945) in Pervouralsk the Department was united with the Department of Theoretical Mechanics, headed by associate professor Kremenshtein L. After the Institute`s coming back to Kyiv in 1944 the Department of Strength of Materials was headed by associate professor  P. Lifshyts and became independent. In 1945 the Department of Machine Components detach from the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Theory of Machines and Mechanisms.

Since 1955, according to the developed new curriculum of engineering training and establishment of the  specialty "Machinery, Apparatus and Units of Light Industry", the training of mechanical engineers for light industry at the first time created graduating Department of Machines and apparatus of light industry in Kyiv Technological Institute of Light Industry has begun.

Later this Departments developed in parallel.

In 1963 Department of Machines and apparatus of light industry wasdivided in the Department of Machines and ApparatusSewing and Knitting Industry, which was headed byKuznetsov B.A., Pyschykov V.A., Voloschenko V.P., SkaternoyV.O. consecutively and the Department of Machinery and Apparatus of Leather and Shoe Industries, the head of which was Piskorski G.A. and Burmistenkov A.P.

In 1986 this Departments were united into one - the Department of Machines and Apparatus of Light Industry, which was headed by Burmistenkov A.P. until 1989, and then - Gorobets V.A.

The Department of Machines and Apparatus of Light Industry became the most powerful Department of the university, there worked more than 100 employees, a large volume of commercial scientific research was performed, including for defense industry.

In 1991 on its base 3 Departments were established: Department of Machinery and Apparatus for Chemical Production and Service (now Department of Electromechanical Systems), Department of Textile Engineering (in the future Department of Metrology, Standardization and Certification) and the Department of Clothing and Shoe Industries, which became the heir of the Department Machines and Apparatus of Light Industry, and it was headed in turn by Gorobets V.A. and Orlovskiy B.V.

In 1998, on its base the united Department of Machinery of Light Industry was established by attaching training in chemical and knitted direction of the before mentioned Departments, and it was headed by Orlovskiy B.V.

It should be noted, that in 1976, this Department also became the base for the Department of Safety and Labor Protection (now the Department Technogenic Safety, Heat and Mass Transfer Processes), disciplines of which were previously taught at the Department of Machinery and Apparatus of Leather and Shoe Industries.

The first head of the Department of Machine Components (1945-1949) was the Director of the Institute, associate professor O. Kukibnyi. In 1949-1951 the head of the Department of Machine Components was associate professor Ya. Yesypenko, and the head of the Department of Strength of Materials in 1947-1951 was associate professor O. Hurvych.

Due to the fact that there were not enough teachers at the Department of Strength of Materials and Machine Components, these Departments were united into one in 1951 Associate professor O. Hurvych was appointed to be the head of the Department of the united Departments and it was headed by him till 1953.

In 1953 the Departments of Strength of Materials and Machine Components were separated again. From 1953 to 1963 the head of the Department of Strength of Materials was Candidate of Technical Science, associate professor A. Vasylenko. Since that time till the establishment of the Department of Applied Mechanics the head of the Department of Strength of Materials were associate professor Shumeiko, (1963-1968), associate professor H. Dybenko, (1968-1975), associate professor Ye. Shershnov, (1975-1980), associate professor I. Debrivnyi, (1980-1988). From 1953 the Department head of the Department of Machine components were associated professor Ya. Yesypenko, (1953-1960), associate professor V. Serdiuk, (1960-1977), associate professor O. Khomiak, (1977-1983), professor B. Pipa, (1983-1987), associate professor A. Tarasenko, (1987-1988).

In 1988 the technical specialties of a discipline Applied mechanics were integrated into the curriculum document. The purpose of this act was to improve the quality of the production engineers training in the Institute by union of the Departments of Strength of Materials, Machine Components and Hosting and Transport Equipment with the part of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics and Theory of Machines and Mechanisms. As the result the Department of Applied Mechanics was established. In 1988-2002 the head of the Department was professor A. Tarasenko.

In 1994 the Department was awarded the status of the administering sub-department. The Department was charged to train bachelors on the major «Mechanical Engineering». Hence the Department was renamed into the Department of Mechanical Engineering. In 2002-2009 the head of the Department was O. Khomiak, Honored Educator of Ukraine, Doctor of Sciences in Engineering, professor. From November 2009 the head of the Department was V. Misiats, Doctor of Sciences in Engineering, professor.

In 2012 the Departmentof Mechanical Engineering was united with the Department of Graphics and Descriptive Geometry of KNUTD.

From November 2014 the head of the Department is O. Manoilenko, Candidate of Sciences in Engineering, associate professor.

Since 2015 at the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been opened bachelors course "Applied Mechanics" and has been given the status of graduating Department. In the same year, Department of Mechanical Engineering was united with the Department of Machines of Light Industry and was renamed into the Department of Applied Mechanics and Machines which has been headed by associate professor Oleksandr MANOILENKO.

Students

Students who study at the Department of applied mechanics and machines in the field 131 Applied mechanics and 133 Engineering branch  of the start to master future profession from the first course, because received  theoretical skills each year  are supported by practical training. The received knowledge of the humanities not only develops the patriotic attitude to the country, but also broadens the mind with different philosophical visions. Knowledge of advanced mathematics and physics are the key to the mastering of complex and at the same time necessary future engineer disciplines such as theoretical mechanics, strength of materials, theory of mechanisms and machines, without of which all future specialists will not have an understanding with any equipment or objects that surround us.

So far as the knowledge of these disciplines gives basic fundamental concepts about the nature and appearance of the forces that origin as a result of physical processes. At the same time the mastering of engineering and computer graphics and ESKD`s standards (unified system of engineering drawings), allows to see the design of a product, its work and purpose and also allows to "communicate" with the technical documentation, which can be written in any foreign language.

In modern conditions of the development of technology and technology, it is no longer possible to imagine a qualitative higher technical education without the full use of modern computer-aided design systems. Therefore, in the process of studying special engineering disciplines, students have the opportunity to study AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CAMWorks, MathCAD, CAD CreoParametric 3.0, ANSYS, which today are not only design tools but also for engineering calculations, analysis, optimization and preparation of production. Thanks to this, the student acquires knowledge with the expansion of competence in the field of possession of modern design tools that can enhance competitiveness in the labor market. As of today, automated design systems such as Solidworks, Creo (Pro / ENGINEER) are widely used in the machine-building complex not only in Ukraine but also around the world.

Thanks to the cooperation of the Kyiv National University of Technology and Design and the company "B-SHARKS" at the Department of Applied Mechanics and Machines, training in the world of robotics has begun. Graduates will have the opportunity to integrate into the world design bureaus, receive orders from leading global companies, as well as create their own mackerel projects, with the possible acceleration of their profitable business. Main directions of training: Robotics; 3D technology; Arduino for beginners; STM 32; AVR for advanced users; Development and piloting with drones; Programming with C ++.

A variety of problems that are solved today by students starts from the design of  simple models and ends with difficult calculations of mechanical systems, and it allows to dive into modern process of products aided design for various purposes, as such tasks encompass not only design of engineering complex, but the design of constructions which are made by welding, parts of metal sheet, plastics, etc. Calculations, which are performed by students during the study of special engineering disciplines, at first time are performed on paper, and then they appear in modern systems engineering analysis, are confirmed by strain-gage measurement, experiments such as calculations of strength, durability of the mechanical systems, heat conduction, activity of liquids and gases during the heat exchange process, hydraulic and pneumatic systems allow to understand the nature of origin of stress and deformation, velocity and temperature distribution in the flow, cavitation, turbulence, etc.

After studying of special disciplines, which form the engineering identity of students, at the undergraduate students study special disciplines, which exactly develop competence and skills for future career. Thus specialist in applied mechanics at the undergraduate masters disciplines which allow to design, to develop, to program various technological machines, elements of logistics, robotics and mechatronic systems which are used in automated warehouses and automated technological processes in various fields of industry, and to provide the maintenance service, mounting and exploitation.

In turn, experts of the engineering industry can design and construct machines and their components with the use of modern tools and computer-aided design calculations, virtual testing, prognostication and optimization of technical specifications, etc.; develop tools, mounting, technological processes, both for mechanical machines and for CNC machines with use of CAM-technologies; choose materials for components and perform their hardening, test their strength, hardness; develop construction of entirely new light industrial machinery, modernize existing ones, as well as equipment for automatic loading of light industry`s products.

Students are supplied with all necessary literature in the KNUTD `s library and methodical literature in the methodical cabinet of the Department and computers for work with the Internet and presentation of tasks. There are two large reading rooms and students’ dining room at the University. The students from another town are supplied with students hostel.
