MASTER CLASS AT THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS AND HIGHER MATHEMATICS

On February 8, 2023, a master class "Lighting design: challenges of time and modern opportunities" for BNT-22 students was held at Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design by Sergey Hopersky, a practicing specialist, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Association of Civil Protection Specialists, head of scientific projects of LLC IC "Basalt Technologies".

Igor Panasiuk, director of the Institute of Engineering and Information Technologies, addressed the students with an introductory speech.

The main theses of the master class

Dark streets, unlit pedestrian crossings, lack of electricity – all these problems stimulate us to be more meticulous about the functionality and at the same time energy efficiency of lighting of premises, stairwells, crossings, streets, and roads.

LED technology is just that universal type of lighting that not only saves resources but also provides ample opportunities for lighting design. Its versatility is due to the structure and properties of the LED. Real examples of lighting (“OKHMATDYT” hospital, Kyiv-Vyshgorod, Kyiv-Chabany, central roads of Kharkiv and Donetsk), in the development of which the author of the master class took part, demonstrated the influence of design on the functional and aesthetic features of lighting.

Another important aspect of the use of LED technology is its ability to create comfort zones for any kind of human activity. Psychologists of Ukraine note the negative impact of poor lighting during the war on the emotional state of people.  Light therapy is the direction of lighting design that is currently experiencing the stage of "pent-up demand" in Ukraine but will definitely be in demand after the victory to be reconstructed. It is necessary to have ready-made “turnkey” projects for implementation.  Now we have gaps in statistical studies that scientifically substantiate the most comfortable types of lighting from a psychological point of view (by intensity, color scheme, etc.), as well as their dubious quality associated with small volumes of samples, on the basis of which conclusions were drawn.

Despite quite a high "scientific degree" of the master class, first-year students provided feedback and showed interest in further research.
