Every year on the second Sunday of October, Artist's Day is celebrated in Ukraine - a professional holiday for those who have devoted their lives to creativity in the field of fine arts, painting, sculpture, graphics, and other forms of visual art. Ukrainian artists of many generations have made a significant contribution to world art with their works and ideas. The events held on this day are aimed at supporting artists, raising their status in society and popularizing art in Ukraine.
So, within the framework of this holiday, on October 5, 2023, at the Department of Digital Art, senior lecturer Uliana Balan held a master class on creating comic strips for students of the first (bachelor's) level of higher education in the OPP "Digital Art". They went through all the stages of creation - from the idea and script to the storyboard and graphic embodiment of the comic strip, and with each step of the work, they discovered new possibilities of their talent and deeply immersed themselves in the world of their own ideas.
Comics is an art form that has become very popular around the world, as a combination of text and pictures and telling a certain story, usually consisting of one or more frames and intended to comically or sarcastically mock certain situations or phenomena. Strips usually have a simple plot and may use a minimum of words or dialogue. They are very common in newspapers, magazines, and the Internet for entertainment and reflection on everyday or social topics. This culture is developing, its influence is growing more and more.
Creating a comic has a significant impact on the professional competence of future digital artists, as it requires developing a whole set of skills and abilities, such as the ability to draw different objects, characters and backgrounds. Illustrators must master different drawing styles and techniques to give a comic book expression and character. Composition is also important to make each frame look logical and interesting. Also, creating a comic requires an understanding of narrative structure, character development, and plot construction. This work helps artists improve their skills in storytelling through imagery and character development. Many comics use bright colors and different stylistic techniques to create mood and emotional content. Artists must learn the choice of colors, the balanced use of shadows and light spots to achieve the desired effect.
