MEETING BETWEEN THE ARC.UA PUBLISHING TEAM AND STUDENTS FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF DIGITAL ART

On May 24, 2024, the ARC.UA publishing team visited our University at the invitation of the Department of Digital Art. It was an inspiring and informative interaction between the editorial representatives and the students – future illustrators and designers.

ARC.UA is renowned for its unwavering commitment to creating and developing a quality culture where Ukrainian artists can share their authentic stories and be heard and seen. The work of the ARC.UA team focuses on diverse experiences and a shared vision of the past and future.

During the meeting, representatives of the ARC.UA editorial team detailed the work of the publishing house and the process of creating book projects. The chief editor, Uliana Suprun, and her team explained that each project starts with an idea that goes through stages of careful discussion and planning. Editors play a key role in this process, working on manuscripts to ensure high-quality content. Executive editor Viktoria Antonenko spoke about the tasks and challenges of an editor in a publishing house.

Book and magazine design is a separate artistic component that requires a creative approach and attention to detail. ARC.UA designer Zakhar Kryvoshyia described the process of creating the visual concept for each project, which begins with researching the topic and the audience for which the publication is intended. The designer works on every element of the layout, from page designs to the cover, to create a harmonious and engaging product. Yehor Bazovkin, communications manager and designer at ARC.UA, talked about his part of the work and emphasized the importance of communication strategies that help convey the unique voice of the publishing house to a wide audience. Valeriya Zalohina, communications manager and author at ARC.UA, shared her writing experience, and Hanna Rak, translator, shared her experience of working on text translations. The meeting was moderated by Marko Suprun, creative editor at ARC.UA.

The discussion was joined by Uliana Balan, a senior lecturer at the Department of Digital Art, who is the author of illustrations for the new ARC.UA book "A Short History of Misogyny" by Jack Holland.

At the meeting, various publishing projects were discussed, such as the Ukrainian online magazine "The Arc," the English-language print magazine "The Black Sea Whale," and the books "Mochi Mantu," "The Narrative," "Failed State," and "A Short History of Misogyny". Each of these projects has an ambitious goal — cultural change, and most importantly, how each of the attendees can be involved in these changes.

This meeting was an important step towards cooperation and mutual development between students and publishing professionals, inspiring everyone present to new achievements and creative endeavors.

We sincerely thank the ARC.UA publishing team for an interesting and motivating meeting!
