VYSHYVANKA: A PERFORMANCE OF IDENTITY AND THE CODE OF UNITY

On the morning of May 21st, the square in front of the fourth building of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design came alive, not with the usual buzz of lectures, but with the vibrant shimmer of authentic ornaments. Vyshyvanka Day is a celebration that has long transcended the format of a simple flash mob. It is a moment where the aesthetics of the past transform into the living energy of the present, and every stitch on a shirt becomes a quiet yet resolute manifesto of our resilience.

At 11:20, the university grounds blossomed with all the colors of national memory – from deep red-and-black traditional patterns to light, contemporary interpretations. Students and faculty, united by a shared rhythm, filled the space to create a living portrait of unity. Within this collective tapestry, everyone felt that the Vyshyvanka is far more than just clothing; it is our shared genetic code, pulsing in unison with the heart of the country.

For us, as people of the arts, this day holds a profound meaning, for the embroidered shirt is a perfect performance of identity. Just as an actor breathes meaning into every movement on stage, or an artist paints layers of sense onto a canvas, we too translate our culture, strength, and will to the world by wearing the Vyshyvanka. Every floral or geometric symbol on the fabric is a script written by generations of ancestors – a script we proudly continue to perform within today’s educational and artistic space.

The group photo that captured this day became something much greater than a mere snapshot. It is a testament to our continuity. While the flash mob has concluded, the sense of elevation remains in the university corridors and our department’s studios. We have proven once again that tradition is not merely about honoring the past, but more importantly, about passing the living flame to future generations. We stand firm on our cultural front, believe in our own strength, and remain true to our roots – for therein lies our victory!
