FROM TRANSLATOR TO READER: GUEST LECTURE BY A PUBLISHING PROFESSIONAL FROM RANOK PUBLISHING HOUSE

On 16 September 2026, the Department of Philology and Translation hosted a guest lecture entitled “From Translator to Reader: How Translated Texts Are Handled in a Publishing House”, delivered by Yuliia Poltavets, a publishing professional from Ranok Publishing House.

The event brought together first- to fourth-year students from different modes of study. The lecture was aimed at strengthening the practical dimension of translator training and familiarising students with real-world professional processes in the publishing industry.

During the lecture, Yuliia Poltavets described the journey of a book from selecting a work and acquiring publishing rights to translation, editorial processing, and presenting the finished publication to readers. Students gained insight into how a publishing house works with Ukrainian and international literature, the collaboration between translators and editors, translation quality requirements, and the specific features of working with texts across different genres.

Particular attention was paid to grant programmes supporting translation, international publishing projects, and the promotion of Ukrainian books abroad, as well as to practical cases from Ranok Publishing House — ranging from the translation of contemporary international bestsellers and literature for children and young adults to manga publishing and the promotion of Ukrainian books in the international market.

Importantly, the Department’s cooperation with the publishing professional extends beyond this guest lecture. Yuliia Poltavets is actively involved in the Department’s educational process and teaches the course “Editing Translated Texts”, enabling students to develop professional competences informed directly by current publishing practice and real-world experience.

The involvement of industry professionals is an important component of the implementation of the educational and professional programme “English Language: Translation in Business Communication”. Such cooperation helps bridge academic training and the practical requirements of today’s translation services market, develops students’ skills in editing and critically evaluating translated texts, and provides them with a deeper understanding of their future professional activities.

The meeting concluded with a professional discussion and a question-and-answer session, during which students had an opportunity to engage directly with the guest speaker.
