Zukunft Ukraine Research Scholarship

 

 

Ukrainian master’s students, doctoral candidates, and postgraduate students can receive funding for a short-term stay in Germany for research purposes.

The aim of the Zukunft Ukraine (Future Ukraine) program is to support academic activities at higher education institutions in Ukraine, as well as to encourage and enable young researchers to contribute to the recovery of Ukraine and its academic community.

Who can apply?

Highly qualified Ukrainian master’s students, postgraduate students, PhD holders (postdoctoral researchers, university lecturers) who work or study at higher education institutions in Ukraine, regardless of the country in which they are currently residing.

What is funded?

A research stay lasting 1 to 6 months at a state or state-recognized German higher education institution or a non-university research institution, carried out in agreement with an academic supervisor in Germany.

Possible funding period: from August 1, 2026, to January 31, 2027. The scholarship cannot be extended.

Scholarship amount

The monthly scholarship amount depends on the academic level:

  • €992 for master’s students;
  • €1,400 for doctoral candidates;
  • €2,000 for postdoctoral researchers;
  • €2,150 for experienced researchers and university lecturers holding a doctoral degree;
  • €2,300 for professors.

Additional payments for health insurance and travel expenses may also be provided.

In cases of disability or chronic illness: a grant for additional expenses related to staying abroad that are not covered by third parties.

Eligibility requirements

Applicants must be enrolled at a Ukrainian higher education institution or employed at a non-university public research institution, and must hold Ukrainian citizenship.

Citizens of third countries who were residing in Ukraine on or before February 24, 2022, with a permanent residence permit, are also eligible to apply.

Reapplication is generally possible; however, there must be a gap of at least 12 months between funding periods.
