On March 13, 2026, a meeting of the student academic club “School of Young Linguists” took place at the Department of Philology and Translation. The meeting was devoted to the topic “The Language of Virtual Reality and Video Games.”
The meeting was opened by the head of the club, Associate Professor Maryna Vyshnevska, who emphasized the growing role of digital media in shaping contemporary language practices. It was noted that video games and virtual reality environments create new communicative spaces in which specific language patterns, vocabulary, and discursive strategies are formed.
Students of groups BAM-23 and BAM-24 actively discussed the linguistic features of communication in video games and VR environments. Particular attention was paid to the following aspects:
• the formation and spread of specialized gaming vocabulary and slang;
• the influence of the English-language environment of video games on the speech of Ukrainian users;
• the specific features of communication between players in multiplayer online games.
The participants provided examples of gaming terminology and lexical borrowings widely used in digital communities and also discussed the role of video games in the transformation of contemporary youth language culture. The discussion demonstrated that language practices in virtual environments shape new modes of interaction and communication, which is of considerable interest for linguistic research. The meeting was held in an atmosphere of engaged discussion. As a result of the meeting, student Daryna Poida (group BAM-23) began preparing a research article entitled “Language Features of Communication in Online Gaming Communities.”
