WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOLOGY AND TRANSLATION'S STUDENT ACADEMIC CLUBS “LINGUISTICS OF EMOTIONS: HOW WORDS CONVEY FEELINGS”

On April 24, 2026, a meeting of the student academic club “School of Young Linguists” took place at the Department of Philology and Translation. The meeting was devoted to the topic “Linguistics of Emotions: How Words Convey Feelings.”

The meeting was opened by the head of the club, Associate Professor Maryna Vyshnevska, who emphasized the significance of studying the emotional component of language in contemporary linguistics. It was noted that language functions not only as a means of transmitting information but also as a tool for expressing inner states, emotions, evaluations, and attitudes toward reality. Particular attention was given to the role of emotional coloring in shaping communicative effect and interpersonal interaction.

Students of groups BAM-23, BAM-24, and BMR1-25 actively discussed the topic, focusing on the following aspects:
• lexical means of expressing emotions, including emotionally colored vocabulary, evaluative language, and interjections;
• the role of intonation, rhythm, and prosody in conveying emotional meaning;
• metaphor and imagery as tools for conceptualizing emotions in language;
• features of emotional expression across different types of discourse: everyday, literary, media, and professional.

The participants provided examples from Ukrainian and English, analyzed excerpts from literary texts, social media posts, and media discourse, paying attention to various linguistic strategies for conveying emotions. Special consideration was given to the cultural specificity of emotional expression and the challenges it poses for translation in intercultural communication.

The discussion demonstrated that the linguistics of emotions is a promising field of contemporary research that integrates cognitive, pragmatic, and sociocultural approaches. The meeting was held in an atmosphere of active and thoughtful academic discussion and demonstrated a high level of student engagement with the issues of language and emotional expression.
