STYLIZATION OF FALL MOTIFS: FROM REALISTIC TO DECORATIVE
The Department of Digital Art at the Faculty of Culture and Creative Industries of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design hosted a sketching session organized by the “Sketching Club” research and creative group. Under the guidance of instructors Alona Andreeva and Svitlana Pashukova, students from groups БЦМ1-26 and БЦМ1-25 (БЦМскн1-26) worked on the theme “Stylization of Autumn Motifs: From Realistic to Decorative.”

The sketching session provided a space for creative exploration of autumn’s natural forms, colors, and textures, as well as for discovering ways to reinterpret them artistically. Working with leaves, fruits, vegetables, flowers, branches, and other autumnal objects, the students explored their shape, silhouette, rhythm, and color characteristics. They paid particular attention to the transition from realistic depiction to decorative imagery. They experimented with simplifying and generalizing forms, transforming natural motifs, and seeking expressive lines, shapes, and color combinations. The sketches helped illustrate how a subject from life gradually transforms into a decorative motif. Stylization became not merely a means of simplifying the subject but a tool for creative interpretation. While working on the assignments, participants learned to identify the characteristic features of an object, omit secondary details, and develop their own artistic solutions.
The hands-on activities helped participants develop their powers of observation, compositional and imaginative thinking, appreciate the connection between nature and the decorative arts, and experiment with various means of artistic expression.
The result was a series of original compositions in which autumn motifs took on a new, decorative quality. The works on display showcase a variety of individual approaches - ranging from an almost realistic depiction of nature to a bold transformation of form and color.

Rethinking nature fosters the development of creative freedom and the formation of one’s own visual language, and helps students realize that an artistic image arises not only from the accurate reproduction of reality but also through the artist’s interpretation.
