NEW ACADEMIC YEAR – NEW DISCOVERIES IN TRANSLATION: “THE ART OF TRANSLATION” STUDENT RESEARCH CLUB RESUMES ITS WORK
On 1 September 2026, the Department of Philology and Translation at KNUTD hosted the first meeting of the “Art of Translation” Student Research Club in the 2026–2027 academic year, supervised by Nataliia Gudkova, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor.
The club members began the new academic year with a discussion of the topic “Literary Translation as Interpretation: Imagery, Style and the Author’s Voice”. The students considered literary translation as a creative process in which the translator not only conveys the content of the original text but also seeks to preserve its imagery, stylistic distinctiveness and the author’s individual voice.

During the meeting, the participants analysed examples of literary texts and their translations, comparing different approaches to rendering metaphors, emotionally coloured vocabulary, stylistic devices and culturally marked elements. Particular attention was paid to the limits of translation as interpretation and to finding a balance between accuracy in conveying the original and preserving its artistic expressiveness.
In the course of the discussion, the students concluded that literary translation requires not only a strong command of languages but also the ability to perceive the author’s style, recognise implicit meanings and find translation solutions capable of preserving the aesthetic impact of the original work on the reader.
The first meeting marked the beginning of a new stage in the club’s activities and opened further opportunities for discoveries in translation, creative exploration and academic discussion. The meeting contributed to the development of students’ translation competences, critical and creative thinking, and deeper knowledge of the theory and practice of literary translation.
