ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
HISTORY

In 2021, a new creative department was established at KNUTD – the Department of Performing Arts, which set the goal of training professional actors of dramatic theater and cinema, who possess production knowledge at the level of the best international standards in performing arts. Initially, the Department was part of the Institute of Internationalization of Higher Education and Science, later it was included in the newly created Faculty of Cultural and Creative Industries. The Department of Performing Arts was headed by Anfisa Kolenko, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, associate professor, theater director, teacher, and scientist in the field of professional acting education. In 2022, the Department was renamed the Department of Performing Arts and Culture. Since then, the Department has taken care of the cultural and creative life of the University.

The Department has big creative plans and ambitions. The Department has attracted talented students to its ranks and strives to create the best educational and material conditions for their professional and creative development. The Department of Performing Arts and Culture invites practicing teachers – leading actors, producers, casting directors, and film directors of Ukraine to teach. Leading specialists in the field of theater and cinema work in the scientific and pedagogical team of the Department: People’s Artists of Ukraine Lev Somov and Vadym Kryshchenko, Honored Artists of Ukraine Viacheslav Dovzhenko, Anatoliy Tykhomyrov, Olena Lazovych, Liudmyla Ardelian, who base their pedagogical work on the classics of domestic theater education and global modern trends in culture and art education. Practicing teachers share their professional experience by conducting professional training sessions, master classes, practical and lecture activities. The Department keeps abreast of the current labor market, realizing the importance for modern students to acquire practical knowledge and skills, therefore the Department introduces dual education into the educational process, which combines university studies with professional practical experience at workplaces in the theater, cinema, and other institutions of the cultural and creative industry. Also, in order to obtain professional competencies, already from the 1st year of study, students have permanent stage practice on 3 stages of KNUTD,  equipped with professional light, sound, and stage machinery.

The modern development of creative industries in Ukraine dictates changes in the approach to art education. The Department is not limited to the framework of dramatic theater and cinema; it tries to give students the opportunity to express themselves creatively in self-created performances, cultural and creative projects, and multi-genre stage productions, focusing not only on professional self-development but also on further promotion of the result of their creative work at the cultural market of Ukraine and beyond.
