ABOUT DEPARTMENT
HISTORY

The Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics (APHM) of The Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design (KNUTD) was established in September 2020 based on two departments: The Department of Higher Mathematics and The Department of Physics.

The main activity of the department is the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of multidisciplinary education, who have fundamental knowledge and are capable of effective use of knowledge and skills in the study of special subjects.

The educational program "Nano- and Microtechnology inCreative Design" offers graduation with the specialty "Applied Physics and Nanomaterials" from the department. Students who enjoy experiments and have an interest in the natural sciences are drawn to this curriculum. They also aim to use a variety of creative approaches to improve the surrounding area by making it more aesthetically pleasing, harmonious, and environmentally friendly.
The program's prospects are that graduates will be able to create projects that combine environmental and aesthetic elements with cutting-edge scientific and technological advancements, and they will be able to contribute to the development of Ukraine as well as the success of these projects by understanding the "physical secrets" of phenomena, materials, and processes.

TEACHING AND RESEARCH STAFF

Olexander KOVALCHUK, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics.

Dr. Kovalchuk graduated from Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University.
His main research areas are Photo dielectric properties of heterogeneous environments with nanoparticles and Physical properties of materials used in light industry.

 

Irina OLEINIKOVA, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor.

Dr. Oleinikova graduated in Physics from the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Her research areas are Photo dielectric properties of heterogeneous environments with nanoparticles and Physical properties of materials used in light industry.

  

Mykola GORBACHUK, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor.

Dr. Gorbachuk graduated from the National Pedagogical Dragomanov University.

His research interests are in Photon and laser synthesis of nanometric iron oxide films.

    

Lyudmila VOLOKH, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Associate Professor at Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics.

Dr. Volokh graduated in Mathematics from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

Research interests: mathematical modeling methods, asymptotic estimation, probabilistic estimation.

   

Volodymyr LAVRYK, PhD in Physics and Mathematics

He graduated from the Berdiansk State Pedagogical Institute in 1997 with a degree in ‘Mathematics and Computer Science’. In 2021, he was awarded the academic degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. He is the author of over 100 published works, including 12 articles in specialist scientific journals indexed in the Scopus database, 2 monographs and 1 textbook.

  

Maksym TESLYK, PhD

Graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Faculty of Physics.

PhD degree: University of Oslo, Norway. Thesis title "Information entropy and its applications in high-energy physics and astrophysics".

Scientific interests: quantum theory of information and its applications, quantum foundations, high-energy physics.

Member of qUA, the quantum workgroup of the Ukrainian Physical Society.

  

Nina KUCHERYAVCHENKOVA, Head of Laboratories of Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics.

Nina Kucheryavchenkova graduated from Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design.

TEACHING AND LABORATORY FACILITIES

The Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics is located in the 4th academic building of the University. To ensure the educational process, the department has lecture rooms, classrooms for practical classes, research laboratories, and  multimedia classrooms. Laboratory workshops in physics are held in specialized training laboratories.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

The academic staff of the department has achieved numerous results in fundamental research in mathematics, physics and their applications, published in national and foreign professional journals and included in scientometric databases.

The Department maintains and continually develops academic links with Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, the G. V. Kurdyumov Institute of Metal Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the V. E. Lashkaryov Institute of Semiconductor Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Students have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-modern equipment at the facilities of the NAS of Ukraine’s institutes.

Lecturers from the department provide academic guidance to staff and postgraduate students at KNUTD, act as external examiners for Master’s and doctoral theses, and review academic and methodological works.

The department has a track record of successful academic work with students, aimed at engaging them in active research. The Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics organises mathematics and physics competitions, which help to identify students with a talent for research and creative work.  The best students engage in research work within student research societies in both the natural sciences and design fields, where they have the opportunity to share their scientific achievements, discuss new ideas and exchange views; they deliver interesting presentations on topical contemporary issues at scientific and practical conferences for young scientists at both national and international levels, and publish abstracts of their research papers. Most of these students find their calling in science, continue their research and, later on, go on to work as lecturers at KNUTD. Exciting excursions to leading international companies are organised for club members.

Most of these students go on to pursue careers in academia, gain international recognition and help develop the department’s start-up activities.

Some graduates continue their academic work after obtaining their bachelor’s degree.

SPECIALITY

The department grants degrees and prepares students for the specialisation 105 "Applied Physics and Nanomaterials" according to the training programme "Nano- and Microtechnology in Creative Design".  Students of APHM have the opportunity to simultaneously assimilate the theoretical foundations of physics (focusing on the tailored properties of nanomaterials) and study the basics of design. Future graduates can acquire practical skills that allow combining aesthetic and environmental values in one object with modern technologies and achievements of science.

PERSPECTIVES FOR STUDENTS

Graduates of speciality E6 "Applied physics and nanomaterials" can be employed in organizations and institutions which create design solutions using the latest nano- and micro-dimensional structures.

The scope of creative design is quite broad: it can encompass issues ranging from inclusive spaces incorporating innovative technologies and nanomaterials to the creation of light-emitting smart clothing for animals.

At the same time, the educational programme offers the opportunity to engage in scientific research, which may lead to innovations that address pressing issues facing Ukraine and the world.

Graduates can perform such professional works as:

  • research engineer in nanotechnology,
  • construction engineer,
  • engineer for the production of nanoparticles,
  • engineer-technologist in nanotechnology,
  • design engineer for nanomaterials,
  • engineer to introduce new technology and equipment,
  • project engineer.
