OLESIA RYBCHENKO. EXHIBITION “THE STRATEGY OF DOMINANCE”

OLESIA RYBCHENKO

In her artistic practice, she forms a new ontology through her personal experience of studying Ukrainian art. Based on the study of the fundamentals: matter, space, time and movement, she strives for a theory of rhythmic spatial influences. She also explores the interaction of rhythms and color with the exhibition environment: gallery, museum, and other spaces, always connecting it to the viewer.

Olesia Rybchenko is a Ukrainian artist and a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. A dedicated researcher of contemporary fine arts and design, she holds a PhD and serves as an Associate Professor of Digital Art at Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design. A graduate of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, she works in both easel and monumental painting and graphics.

In her artistic practice, Olesia Rybchenko constructs a new ontology rooted in a deeply personal engagement with Ukrainian art. Grounded in the exploration of fundamental concepts – matter, space, time, and movement – she pursues the development of a theory of rhythmic spatial influence. Her work also delves into the interplay between rhythm and color within the context of exhibition environments, galleries, museums, and beyond, always maintaining a vital connection with the viewer.

Education: Master of Fine Arts at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (studio of V. Gurin, A. Tverdyi, V. Kuleba, V. Vydorodova-Gauthier, T. Golembievska).

Art exhibition “The Strategy of Dominance” reveals the basic rules of domination and survival in a certain time space and on a certain, defined territory.

Artist Olesia Rybchenko delves into the parallel dimensions of historical epochs, focusing particularly on the wartime period, where visual art assumes new, urgent responsibilities in response to the challenges of our era. Her work explores the shifting boundaries of perception – the fine line between life as a game and survival as a strategy. The pieces presented in this project were initiated in 2022, born from a time of upheaval and transformation. Several of them have already been featured in charitable exhibitions in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, held at prominent art venues in Lviv and Lutsk, as well as in museums and galleries across the United States and Germany.

By focusing the series of paintings “The Strategy of Dominance” around my personal experience during the war, I explore how changes in established rules transform not only the course of life but also our roles within it. The central concept of the project is the strategy of the game “DOMINANCE” where the objective is to conquer the enemy and seize territory to become the most powerful player on the field. But what does it truly mean to dominate others? Is it about being the strongest force, possessing the largest territory, or commanding the most formidable army? “Expand as far as you can, and fight as hard as you can” – is this the motto of our time? When you read the rules of a virtual game, you process them with detachment, accepting them as part of the game world. But when those same rules spill into your real, lived experience, the perception shifts. The game becomes personal. The consequences are deeply human.
