An online lecture, “Sustainable fashion future: A review of current sustainable technology and how brands are using them”, has been recently held at the Faculty of Fashion Industry at KNUTD.
Teachers of the School of Fashion and Textiles of Birmingham City University (UK) initiated this lecture as part of international cooperation. The lecture was prepared and delivered by Louise Martin and Natalie Martin, who teaches Foundation in Fashion and Textiles at Birmingham City University.
Eighty-seven participants took part in the event, including students and postgraduates of the specialties 015.36 Professional Education (Technology of Light Industry Products) and 182 Technologies of Light Industry. The teachers of the Department of Professional Education in Technologies and Design were the co-organizers, and Professor Tetiana Derkach was the moderator of the event from the Ukrainian side.
Louise Martin has experience as a designer and stylist and more than ten years of teaching experience in fashion and textiles. As a designer, Louise has established her own business and expanded her knowledge in the creative sector. She constantly learns new techniques and technical know-how and improves her skills in working with clients to develop end products that are ready for the market.
Natalie Martin has worked with the brands such as Joseph Turvey and Hades Knitwear as a freelance designer, production assistant, and illustrator, and on show production for presentations at London Fashion Week Men’s. Hands-on work with small luxury brands has given her a holistic view of the industry, with experience in CAD, design, fashion illustration, styling, and fashion show creation.
The lecture highlighted the seven key points of the Green Strategy for more sustainable fashion production and consumption, as well as the central sustainable fashion systems currently in place in the UK and globally. For a sustainable fashion industry, it is essential to reduce the amount of waste and avoid overproduction, work with local communities, support crafts, and work with natural materials that can later either biodegrade or be recycled.
The modern technologies and solutions of the world’s leading designers were demonstrated to the interested students at the lecture. They can become a source of inspiration for creating collections of future professionals and developing student start-ups.
The Faculty of Fashion Industry hopes to continue further cooperation with Birmingham City University in implementing joint projects.
Many thanks to Louise Martin and Natalie Martin for an exciting and inspiring lecture! We sincerely thank all the people of Great Britain for the constant and strong support of Ukraine in the fight against Russian military aggression.
