On October 31, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., a public lecture titled “Postmodernist Discourse of Modern Ukrainian and Foreign Drama” by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor Nataliia Yuhan took place. The meeting was attended online as well as in the conference hall (room 1-0130) by the lecturers and students of the Department of Philology and Translation of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, the future translators and teachers of Ukrainian and English languages.

Appreciators of literature, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor Olena Yufereva and Senior Lecturer Svitlana Krasniuk, came to learn about the latest scientific work of a German colleague. Both the lecturer and the staff of the department were sincerely pleased with the interest in the lecture from the external stakeholders of our educational programs. The philologists from the Taras Shevchenko Luhansk National University (Poltava, Myrhorod, Lubny): Viktoriya Dmytrenko – Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Olha Kryzhanivska – Doctor of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor, Acting Head of the Depatment of Ukrainian and Foreign Literature, Darya Perepadya – Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Acting Head of the Department of Oriental Languages, Svitlana Shpetna – Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor, Acting Head of the Department of Foreign Languages by Professional Direction have joined us. The meeting was moderated by Associate Professor of the Department Svitlana Dvorianchykova.

The lecturer covered a wide range of works by modern Ukrainian and foreign playwrights and revealed the peculiarities of the artistic interpretation of current political and sociocultural problems: anticipation and experience of war, unmotivated aggression and violence, and social responsibility. The lecture proposed different approaches to the analysis of modern drama.

For the fellowship, the study of plays by Ukrainian authors seemed interesting, demonstrating the variety of genre modifications and the depth of the national tradition of dramaturgy in hybrid forms such as ‘vertep’, street mystery, docudramas, and monodramas

The interdisciplinary approach exemplified the possibilities of drama in embodying the psychology of terrorism and school shooting.

In the end, the lecturer suggested to the students and colleagues to contemplate the well-known plots of Shakespearean tragedies that have been rewritten into comedy in the postmodern plays of Koki Mitani (Japan) and Ann-Maria MacDonald.

The incredibly informative, multifaceted, and emotionally saturated lecture of Nataliia Yuhan introduced the listeners to modern trends in the development of literature in Ukraine and beyond, to the little-known works, and searching for artistic solutions to complex and urgent problems.
