DEFENSE OF RESULTS OF STUDENTS’ PRACTICAL TRAINING AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ART AND FASHION DESIGN

In early March 2024, the Department of Art and Fashion Design held defenses of educational, industrial and pre-diploma practices of future fashion designers – higher education seekers of the first (bachelor’s) level under the “Fashion Design” educational program.

The first-year students presented their practice reports and demonstrated drawings, sketches and graphic stylization of flora and fauna, sketches of architecture, etc. They made these works in the open air, during visits to natural, historical and art museums, galleries under the guidance of PhD Iryna Chubotina, senior teacher of the Department.

The students also presented at the defense the results of an individual task, namely recycling a finished product or making a new product or accessory created using their own sketches and styling.

The main tasks of the educational practice of the 2nd-year bachelors were: visiting museums, exhibitions, studying and inspecting samples of European and Ukrainian costume, works of decorative and applied art, painting, graphics, sculpture, photographing works, making sketches, describing the most interesting samples. The students, together with Iryna Davydenko, head of practice, associate professor of the Department of Art and Fashion Design, visited the costume funds of the National Museum of Architecture and Life of Ukraine, familiarized themselves with samples of authentic costume and carried out reconstruction of products.

One of the many locations visited as part of the educational practice was the National Museum of Decorative Arts of Ukraine, namely, the exhibition of paintings by H. Sobachko-Shostak "Eyes of Flowers" and the exhibition "Reflection", dedicated to the punching technique, where students got acquainted with samples of Ukrainian clothing, objects of decorative and applied art, and also attended a master class on mastering the punching technique.

The students also visited the branch of the Kyiv Museum of History – the Museum of the Sixties, where they viewed the exhibition "The Last Gift" dedicated to the work of a designer L. Panchenko. At the Museum of Theater, Music and Film Arts of Ukraine, the students were invited to a guided tour "100 years of avant-garde museum". Among other exhibits, the museum presents early sketches of world-famous Ukrainian theater artists of the 20th century V. Meller and A. Petrytsky, who started the collection of the Ukrainian scenographic avant-garde of the 1910s and 1920s.

The result of the 2nd-year educational practice task was a life-size reproduction of one sample of the Ukrainian folk costume (skirt, apron, wrap, shirt, gunia coat, vest, girdle, bead necklace, wax wreath, ochipok) of a certain ethnographic region – at the student’s choice; gathering information on the regional, compositional, and formative features of the selected sample.

The industrial and pre-diploma practice of the 3rd and 4th-year bachelors of the educational program "Fashion Design" took place at the Ukrainian enterprises of the fashion industry, in particular, the fashion brand "KASS", sole proprietor B.V. Kass; design studio "i-CHEF by Irina Makhinko"; LLC "T-style" ("Goldi" brand); "BYZANTIA 1" LLC (M-TAK uniform clothing brand); fashion brand ANDRE TAN; “The Dress Shop” enterprise (Canada), and many others.

The main tasks of this practice were to improve the practical skills of independent work as a fashion designer in the process of developing and practical implementation of a clothing model in the material. Depending on the conditions at a specific enterprise, the students were offered to specify an individual task in one of three formats: execution of modern clothing models, reconstruction of historical clothing, and execution of a model using the upcycling technique.

Based on the results of industrial and pre-diploma practices, the students got acquainted with the technologies, equipment and organization of modern fashion production, as well as traditional and new materials, methods of cooperation with partners and potential consumers of fashionable clothes.
