On April 2, 2024, the students of the Department of Computer Engineering and Electromechanics under the leadership of the curator, Associate Professor Yevgeniia ROMANIUK visited the National Historical and Memorial Preserve “Babyn Yar”.
This area in Kyiv is one of the symbols of the Nazi policy of genocide. Babyn Yar is a world-famous place of tragedy that has become a symbol of the Holocaust. During the fascist occupation of Ukraine, more than 100,000 peaceful Soviet citizens, prisoners of war, underground fighters, partisans, hostages, members of the OUN, mentally ill people, etc., were shot here.
The second tragic event of Babyn Yar was the Kurenivskyi flood (Kurenivskyi tragedy). The Kurenivka tragedy is a man-made disaster that occurred in March 1961, when a powerful mudflow from Babyn Yar flooded Kurenivka through a broken dam and resulted in numerous victims.
And in our time, during the shelling of Kyiv, Russian rockets hit the area of the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial – the old Jewish cemetery. The leadership of the aggressor country cynically “announced” this air strike as a fight against the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) technological facilities.
During the tour, the students noted the importance of studying the tragic events of the past for building the future, and also expressed their intention to work for the preservation and popularization of historical memory.
Against the background of memories of the past, piercing memory and deep sadness, the students noted that spring is in the yard. This has long been not only a symbol of the renewal of nature, but also the beginning of a new stage in history. Life goes on despite the hardships of the past.
Now, more than ever, Ukrainians must unite in a persistent struggle for our common victory. Remembering the past and looking to the future, we stand together, multiplying efforts to defeat the darkness of the past and build a bright tomorrow for Ukraine.
