LECTURE BY YELYZAVETA ISAKOVA, HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOLOGY AND TRANSLATION, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, FOR STUDENTS OF BAKU SLAVIC UNIVERSITY

Scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department of Philology and Translation of KNUTD are implementing an international program of academic credit mobility for students of higher education of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design and Baku Slavic University. As part of the “Ukrainian and English language practice: trip to Ukraine” program, on May 13, 2024, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Philology and Translation of KNUTD Yelyzaveta Isakova gave an integrated lecture on “Ukrainian customs and traditions”. The participants of the educational programs “Translation (Azerbaijani-Ukrainian)” and “Regional Studies (Ukraine)” of Baku Slavic University joined the event.

Yelyzaveta Isakova started the communication with the students, whose future professions are connected with Ukraine and the Ukrainian language, by informing the students that Ukrainians preserve and nurture their customs and traditions. Ukrainian society is sure that people should know their history, national traditions and their past. The listeners learned a lot of interesting and useful things about Ukrainian holidays and important dates, traditional dishes and clothes.

The lecturer told the audience about the traditions of celebrating Christmas, Masnytsia, Easter, New Year and Independence Day in Ukraine.

The students were familiarized with the recipes of Ukrainian borshch, varenyky and holubtsi (cabbage rolls). Our people understand tasty food. Ukrainian chefs are proud of the fact that they can satisfy the tastes of even the most demanding gourmets.

Azerbaijani students looked at pictures of Ukrainian vyshyvanka (embroidered shirt). The history of vyshyvanka has deep roots. Ukrainians consider vyshyvanka a talisman. It is a symbol of family memory, good fortune, good health and beauty. Vyshyvankas were and are being passed down from generation to generation and are preserved and kept today in Ukrainian families as heirlooms. Every year on the third Thursday of May, Ukraine celebrates Vyshyvanka Day, a unique and original national holiday. On this particular day, millions of Ukrainians go to work, university or school in embroidered shirts or dresses. In 2024, Vyshyvanka Day falls on May, 16.

The students had the opportunity to communicate in English and asked numerous questions about Ukraine and Ukrainians, to which the lecturer provided answers.

At the end of the meeting, Yelyzaveta Isakova offered the students of Baku Slavic University to take a test to control the level of knowledge gained and assimilation of the material studied.

We sincerely thank the colleagues and students of Baku Slavic University for their cooperation and desire to learn!
