In September 2024, the academic staff of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business of the Faculty of Management and Business Design held a scientific and methodological seminar on the topic “Development of Social Entrepreneurship in the Context of War in Ukraine”.
The event was moderated by Taliat Belyalov, Head of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business, Professor.
The scientific and methodological seminar was attended by the academic staff of the Department of Entrepreneurship and Business, as well as higher education students of the Faculty of Management and Business Design, and members of the scientific club “Development of Innovative Entrepreneurship in the Smart Economy”.
Samir Gurdzhi, founder and Director General of TRADECITY LLC, Yug-Trading Group LTD, made a presentation. Mr. Gurdzhi noted that Russia’s full-scale invasion has become a catalyst for profound social transformations in Ukraine. Numerous problems have come to the surface and exacerbated, namely, the rapid growth of unemployment, the increase in the number of vulnerable categories of the population and the weakening of their social protection. Unfortunately, the number of people with disabilities is also increasing. Therefore, social enterprises can be one of the innovative tools for addressing these issues.
The speaker emphasized the main difference between social entrepreneurship and ordinary business. It is proved that social entrepreneurship is a unique opportunity to combine a social mission with a desire to make money, provide certain services and sell goods. The activities of social enterprises today contribute to solving the problems of socially vulnerable people, their employment and social adaptation. Samir Gurdzhi’s presentation was followed by a lively discussion focused on the current state of social entrepreneurship in Ukraine and the possibilities of its functioning in the face of uncertainty. The issue of the legal regulation of social enterprises in Ukraine was of particular interest.
At the conclusion of the creative discussion and exchange of experiences at the seminar, it was emphasized that the involvement of practitioners in such events will not only promote critical and ethical thinking and awareness among teachers and students, but also ensure that future professionals will gain the knowledge and moral compass necessary to address complex social issues in the context of the war in Ukraine.
