On October 11, 2024, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor of the Department of Management and Smart Innovations, practical psychologist, trainer Olena Vartanova conducted a social experiment on the topic “Social Influence. The Effect of Group Conformism” for students of the course “Public Communications and Public Relations”.
The experiment is timed to the International Day of Mental Health and the National Program of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support.
Modeling an experiment on group conformity (or the social influence of a group on individuals) has become a great way to demonstrate how people tend to conform to the opinions or actions of the majority, even if it conflicts with their own beliefs.
Conducting the experiment made it possible to demonstrate also other principles of social influence, in particular, authority, suggestion, imitation and commitment.
Based on work in groups, the students were able to understand the effect of group conformity and how a person is influenced by society, what psychological mechanisms are behind group conformity, and how this phenomenon can affect their lives.
Awareness of the principles of social influence and manipulations in communications is a reliable shield to protect against them!
