On October 3, 2024, undergraduate students of the Department of Finance and Business Consulting, together with their curators Dmytro Kovalenko and Andrii Zolkover, visited the Babyn Yar Historical Holocaust Memorial Center in Kyiv. This tour was organized as part of an educational program aimed at deepening the knowledge of young people about the tragic events of the Holocaust in Ukraine. The visit to the memorial was an important opportunity for students to realize the importance of memory and historical justice.
Babyn Yar is one of the most tragic pages in world history, associated with the Second World War and Nazi crimes against humanity. On September 29, 1941, mass executions began at Babyn Yar and lasted for two years. This is the place where thousands of innocent people fell victim to Nazi terror during World War II. We must remember these horrific events of our past and honor the memory of those who perished in this tragedy.
The purpose of the tour was to honor the memory of the victims of the tragedy, as well as to familiarize the students with the history of the Holocaust and mass shootings during World War II. An important aspect of the visit was the education of historical memory, tolerance, and civic responsibility among young people. This experience was of great importance to the students, as knowledge about the history of their homeland shapes their consciousness and identity. During the tour, the students had an opportunity to better understand the scale of the tragedy and its consequences for the present. The students said that their impressions of the visit were extremely deep and emotional.
Such events play an important role in the formation of an educated and conscious society. They not only deepen young people’s knowledge of history, but also contribute to the development of empathy, tolerance and critical thinking. Through such tours, students have an opportunity to realise the value of memory, which is an integral part of our identity, and understand how past events affect the present.
