The Department of Industrial Pharmacy of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design continues the tradition of popularizing science among young people, as well as career guidance aimed at attracting applicants.
On October 29 and 30, 2024, the academic staff of the Department of Industrial Pharmacy successfully conducted a practical intensive «KyivOpenLab-2024» dedicated to pharmaceutical and cosmetic chemistry. The event lasted for two days and was adapted for different audiences: on the first day, the event was attended by freshmen of the Department of Industrial Pharmacy, and on the second day – by schoolchildren of grades 10-11. The practical intensive brought together schoolchildren from different secondary education institutions in Kyiv, including Lyceum №34 named after Viktor Maksymenko, secondary comprehensive school №67, Scientific Lyceum №208, Physics and Mathematics Lyceum №142, Optima online school, Ukrainian medical lyceum at O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, and School №175 named after Valeriy Marchenko. We are pleased that schoolchildren from other cities, including Mykolaiv Lyceum №22, also joined the event.
At the beginning of the practical intensive, the participants were greeted by Volodymyr BESSARABOV, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Professor of the Department of Industrial Pharmacy. He told the high schoolchildren about the activities and achievements of the university, the modern material and technical base, the conditions of admission and training in the educational and professional programmes «Innovative Pharmaceuticals», «Industrial Pharmacy» and «European Cosmeceuticals», as well as the prospects for employment in the specialty in the future.
After completing the introductory part and a study tour of the Department of Industrial Pharmacy, the participants moved on to the practical stage of the intensive course. Under the guidance of Olena ISHCHENKO, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Industrial Pharmacy, and the department's laboratory assistants, they made cosmetic products: hydrogel patches and fragrant decorated bath bombs.
Then the participants of the intensive course mastered modern pharmaceutical technologies. At the Educational and Research Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology, Chemogenomics and Biogerontology, they learned about the process of obtaining a dry extract of Chicorium intybus using spray drying, a modern technology widely used in the pharmaceutical industry.
And during the next masterclass, participants of KyivOpenLab-2024 produced a functional vitaminized product using the method of centrifugal fiber formation – cotton candy with the content of freeze-dried orange.
These masterclasses have become a vivid example of how modern technology can be used to create innovative products and that science can be not only challenging but also delicious.
The KyivOpenLab-2024 practical intensive ended with the solemn awarding of participants with certificates certifying their achievements. Each participant also received a set of exclusive products that they had made themselves during the event.
Sincere smiles, sparkle in the eyes and inspired feedback from students and schoolchildren were the best assessment of the practical intensive «KyivOpenLab-2024: Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Chemistry». We hope that this event will inspire many high school students to choose to study at the Department of Industrial Pharmacy of KNUTD, and motivate our freshmen to engage in active research in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
