On 21-25 October 2024, the teaching staff of the Department of Philology and Translation of the Institute of Law and Modern Technologies held a number of educational and cultural events as part of the Week of Modern Foreign Languages “Translation Horizons – 2024”: thematic classes dedicated to the International Translation Day, a competition for translation of fiction and poetry, the quest ‘The Word Matters’, a festive concert that united teachers and students of our university.

On 21 October 2024, senior lecturer Svitlana Lebedieva conducted a thematic lesson on the topic ‘Latin – the secret code of a translator’ in the BSHMK1-21 group. The meeting aroused great interest and lively discussion among all participants. The evolution of a language is closely related to the cultural life of its speakers. The students discussed the influence of Latin on modern European languages and its unique significance in the translation practice.

The meeting helped the students to gain a deeper understanding of how Latin, the language of science and art, helps to smooth out cognitive dissonance when translating specialised texts.

On 22 October 2024, senior lecturer Svitlana Honcharenko held a thematic evening ‘Criteria for Translating a Work of Art’ in the BDо2-23 group. Students had the opportunity to feel the atmosphere of the art work, to recreate the feelings of the author of an authentic sample and to realise the importance of words and how they can be interpreted depending on the context.

Associate professor Maryna Vyshnevska organised a thematic lesson dedicated to current trends in translation for the students of BAM 1-21, entitled ‘Translator in the Digital Age: New Opportunities and Challenges’. During the meeting, special attention was paid to the possibilities of increasing the efficiency of translators' work provided by modern technologies, such as the use of machine translation tools, the creation of multilingual websites, and software localisation. The students discussed issues related to the ethical aspects of using artificial intelligence in translation and maintaining translation quality in the context of digital transformation.

On 21 October 2024, associate professor of the Department of Philology and Translation Kseniia Kuhai held a thematic meeting ‘Translation: the vocation of the one who cherishes the language’ with the students of the BAM-22 group.

During the presentations, the students discussed how translators contribute to the preservation of cultural memory by adapting texts for other language communities without losing national identity. In particular, they emphasized the importance of film and song translation, where a properly conveyed cultural context can significantly affect the perception of a film.

This event became a platform for the exchange of views and practical experience, which helped to deepen the understanding of the importance of the translation profession in the modern world of interconnected cultures.
