During the first week of the spring academic semester, the Department of Interior and Furniture Design held the defense of educational, industrial, and pre-diploma practical training of future environmental designers – students of the “Environmental Design” educational program at both the bachelor’s and master’s levels.
The objective of the first-year students’ educational practical training was to create complex sketches of furniture objects from life, as well as develop their own conceptual designs for furniture products. Each comprehensive sketch had to include multiple views, various perspectives, orthogonal projections, callouts of interesting details and materials, exploded views, explanatory notes, etc. During the first week of practical training, students sketched furniture objects surrounding them at home or in dormitories; in the following weeks, they visited furniture shopping centers, exhibitions, and museums together with the practice supervisor.
Review of practical training reports of first-year students under the “Environmental Design” educational program
On the day of the defense, the students presented their practical training reports and sets of sketches. The review of the works was conducted by Oleksandra Shmelova-Nesterenko (practical training supervisor, Associate Professor), Danylo Kosenko (head of the Department, PhD, Associate Professor), Natalia Ryshkevych (senior lecturer), and Svitlana Ostapyk (Department assistant).
During their educational practical training at KNUTD, second-year students enhanced their skills in using specialized software for developing design projects. The task of the practical training was to design a furniture piece for seating (a chair or armchair), prepare CAD drawings of the general view, detailed drawings, and material layout. Based on these drawings, the students created scale models of the designed products using laser cutting machines. Additionally, they were required to prepare a project presentation using graphic design software.
Results of the educational practical training of second-year students of the "Environmental Design" educational program
The review of student works and defense of practical training reports of second-year students was conducted by Danylo Kosenko (head of the Department, PhD, Associate Professor), Oleksandra Shmelova-Nesterenko (Associate Professor), Natalia Ryshkevych (senior lecturer), and Lev Dubovenko (Department assistant, practical training supervisor).
The bases for the third-year students’ industrial practical training were the companies VIYAR, ELIO HOME, and MIRA ARCHITECTS. During their training at VIYAR and ELIO HOME, students familiarized themselves with the companies’ showrooms, materials, ergonomics, and features of working with clients and contractors. At the production facilities, they observed the process of manufacturing furniture components and products, received practical assignments, and learned valuable tips from experienced professionals. In the architectural studio MIRA ARCHITECTS, students worked on a real assignment – the interior design project of a library in the city of Irpin.
Completion of industrial practical training by third-year students of the “Environmental Design” educational program at production sites and showrooms of VIYAR and ELIO HOME companies
The defense of practical training reports by third-year students was conducted by Danylo Kosenko (head of the Department), Ruslan Ahliullin (PhD, Associate Professor), and Svitlana Ostapyk (Department assistant, practical training supervisor).
During the pre-diploma practical training, fourth-year students conducted their own pre-project research as part of their qualification work topics. They studied regulatory and scientific literature on the subject, researched international and domestic experience in designing similar objects, analyzed the architectural context of the design object, and studied the target audience. The practical training was supervised by the Department’s academic staff – supervisors of the students’ qualification works. The defense of practice reports was conducted by Danylo Kosenko (head of the Department), Ruslan Ahliullin (Associate Professor), and Ihor Antonenko (senior lecturer).
The industrial practical training of first-year master students took place at enterprises in Kyiv and across Ukraine. Many master students are practicing designers and completed their practice at their workplaces. The students presented various practical works completed based on real assignments. The defense of practice reports was conducted by Danylo Kosenko (head of the Department), Ruslan Ahliullin (Associate Professor), and Oleksandra Shmelova-Nesterenko (Associate Professor).
Practical works by master students completed at the production sites based on real orders
Practical training is an essential component of the “Environmental Design” educational program. It enables students to enhance their knowledge and skills in professional courses by working on real projects while fostering collaboration between the Department’s academic staff, students, and industry professionals.
