LECTURE OF A PROFESSIONAL TRANSLATOR YULIIA ZAICHENKO FOR THE APPLICANTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOLOGY AND TRANSLATION

Meetings with practitioners for students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th courses of the bachelor's level of education are constantly organized by the Department of Philology and Translation of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design as an important component of the educational process and professional training of future competitive specialists.

Within the activities of the Institute of Law and Modern Technologies, KNUTD, to the Vacancies Fair-2025, April 26, 2025, a lecture "Industry-specific Translation: Professional Peculiarities" by the experienced technical translator of the Scientific and Production Association "Impulse" Yulia Zaichenko was represented for the applicants of the educational program "English language: translation in business communications" (specialty 035 Philology).

The translator told the students about the work and career opportunities in the field of translation, her professional and scientific path, outlined the role of modern technologies (artificial intelligence, machine translation, translation automation systems) and importance of post-editing in machine translation, gave useful advice and answered numerous questions from the students.

Yuliia Zaichenko noted that a philologist can work as a freelance or full-time translator, translation editor, technical editor, translator-referent and translation project manager, as well as can master related fields and become, for example, a technical writer, journalist, teacher or computer linguistics specialist. For a successful start of a career and further development, a young translator should be ready to risk and learn a lot of new things.

The translator emphasized that modern tools, Chatgpt, Google Translate, Deepl, specialized translation software, SDL Trados Studio, MemoQ, MateCAT, etc., play an important role in translating. According to the specialist, the post-editing of machine translation is an integral part of the modern translation process. Together with the translator, the students analysed the stages of post-editing: preparation, familiarization with the original text, assessment of the quality of machine translation, post-editing and final reading. The applicants got acquainted with the list of common machine translation errors, such as: wrong translation, terminological inaccuracies, linguistic and stylistic mistakes, consistency violation and cultural barriers.

The students learned a lot of useful information about the effective starting of a professional career, organization of translation projects and peculiarities of the use of the latest technologies for improving skills and standing effective competition in the modern translation market and in the conditions of rapid digital progress.

We thank the stakeholder of the educational program "English Language: translation in business communications" of the Department of Philology and Translation, KNUTD, for the given lecture to our students and an opportunity to enrich their knowledge, gain valuable practical experience and open new prospects for an international career.
