On May 2, 2025, as part of the Ukrainian Design and Innovation Week, KNUTD hosted a lecture by Kateryna Chrichlow, a visiting lecturer at Birmingham City University, designer, member of the Royal Society of Artists FRSA (UK), on the topic “Opportunities of artificial intelligence programs for design”.
Kateryna Chrichlow spoke about the capabilities of modern Artificial Intelligence programs that are currently being used in such areas as fashion, multimedia, architecture, digital games, advertising, etc.
The lecture focused on the practical aspects and examples of design product development, as well as the capabilities of artificial intelligence programs for creating and editing videos, text, images, etc: lookfashion.ai, TheNewBlack, newarc.ai, Midjorney, DALL-E, Open AI, Rodin, HeyGen, SORA, and others.
Ms Kateryna said that the growing popularity of AI raises important ethical issues, including plagiarism and authorship of created products. These issues can be resolved by introducing a creative approach to using AI as a tool rather than a full-fledged author. An alternative is a multi-stage creative method, where each stage requires design thinking and professional input. This approach allows the end result to be considered the intellectual property of the designer.
K. Chrichlow shared her experience of teaching disciplines at Birmingham City University, where they teach students to perform thorough pre-project research and select a creative source, background information, and references before using AI programs. The lecturer gave specific examples of student work performed using the proposed method, when students perform pre-project analysis and involve several AI programs, as well as mixed reality to create projects.
Together with Kateryna Chrichlow, the students and teachers of the Faculty of Design listened to the presentations of students Susana Mowsisjan (Birmingham City University, UK) and Mariia Ponomarenko (KNUTD), who shared their experience of using AI programs to implement the joint project “XR Inspired Innovation concept creation 2025” (Birmingham | Kyiv), which involved the development of virtual exhibition spaces and multimedia design products under the guidance of teachers from partner universities in Ukraine and the UK.
Speech by Suzanne Mowsisjan
Speech by Maria Ponomarenko
The lecture was attended by teachers and students of the Faculty of Design, the educational programs “Graphic Design”, “Multimedia Design”, “Environmental Design”, “Fashion Design”, “Design (by type)” of the bachelor’s and master’s levels, as well as postgraduate students of the Faculty of Design had the opportunity to ask questions and get answers.
We sincerely thank Ms. Kateryna Chrichlow for an interesting and informative lecture!
