ACHIEVEMENTS OF TRANSLATION STUDENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHILOLOGY AND TRANSLATION: CERTIFICATES IN DIGITAL PHILOLOGY

Students of the Department of Philology and Translation at Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design (KNUTD) continue to expand their academic horizons and professional skills beyond the classroom. Guided by their lecturers, first- to fourth-year undergraduates regularly explore opportunities for non-formal and informal education, taking part in additional training that strengthens and broadens their professional competencies.

This year, students of the educational program «English Language: Translation in Business Communication» (specialty B 11 Philology) Pavlo Shevchenko (group BAM-21) and Olena Khomliak (group BZAM-23) successfully passed the selection process and joined international online courses in digital philology organized for Ukrainian students by universities in Jena, Helsinki, and Ukraine. Over the spring semester of 2024-2025, they completed two key programs: «Innovative Technologies in Translation Practice» and «Digital Technologies for the Ukrainian Language».

«The Innovative Technologies in Translation Practice» course introduced students to the latest tools for automating translation, including CAT systems, machine translation platforms, and post-editing techniques. Participants gained experience with computer-assisted translation software, project management in collaborative settings, and hybrid approaches to translation. They also worked with translation memories, terminology databases, and modern AI-based resources to enhance the quality and efficiency of translation practice.

«The Digital Technologies for the Ukrainian Language» course provided participants with fundamental knowledge of applying digital tools to the study of the Ukrainian language. Students explored applications of these technologies in applied linguistics, ranging from communicative and gender studies to forensic, psycholinguistic, stylistic, and advertising linguistics. They acquired practical skills in working with text corpora, frequency dictionaries, ChatGPT, and specialized software for processing the Ukrainian language, such as TextAttributor, Ukrainian Constructicon, CoCoCo Ukrainian (Collocations, colligations, constructions), and Stimulus.

In July 2025, the team of the Department of Philology and Translation at KNUTD further advanced its expertise through participation in the course «Corpora for Linguists», organized by the Institute of Philology at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Associate Professor of the Department, PhD in Philology, Svitlana Dvorianchykova, and student of the program «English Language: Translation in Business Communication» (specialty B 11 Philology) Olena Khomliak (group BZAM-23) attended a series of lectures on corpus linguistics and corpus work, enhanced their skills with the SketchEngine platform, conducted their own mini-research projects, presented their findings at the concluding conference, and published abstracts in the electronic proceedings.

We sincerely thank our colleagues and partners for providing the students of the program «English Language: Translation in Business Communication» of the Department of Philology and Translation at KNUTD with the opportunity to deepen their professional knowledge, gain practical experience, and open up new career prospects.
