MANUSCRIPT INITIALS: THE DEPARTMENT OF DIGITAL ART CELEBRATES ALL-UKRAINIAN LIBRARY DAY

On the occasion of All-Ukrainian Library Day, celebrated annually on September 30, the Faculty of Culture and Creative Industries at KNUTD hosted a workshop entitled “Initials from Medieval European Manuscripts”. The event was led by Uliana Balan, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Digital Art, and was attended by second-year students of the “Digital Art” educational program.

During the session, students learned about the history and characteristics of book production in the Middle Ages, explored the artistic expressiveness and plasticity of the letters of that era, and recreated medieval initials. They also practiced working with metal leaf, which allowed them to experience the atmosphere of illuminated manuscripts and develop skills in decorative embellishment.

The workshop proved valuable in deepening students’ understanding of the book as both a unique cultural phenomenon and an art object. They were able to see how, in a historical context, the library functioned not only as a repository of knowledge but also as a center of creativity and innovation. This experience helps today’s students better appreciate the importance of book culture and its influence on contemporary visual art.
