On 13 October 2025, Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design held a grand opening of the Educational-Scientific Laboratory of “Finishing of Textile Materials”, timed and dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the University. The symbolic cutting of the red ribbon was a landmark moment for the Faculty of Arts and Fashion and the entire university community.
Oleksandra Olshanska, Acting Rector, Doctor of Economics, Professor, and Distinguished Educator of Ukraine, delivered a welcoming speech to the participants. Oleksandra Volodymyrivna noted that the new laboratory, as an innovative space, will serve not only as a centre for learning and professional development for students, postgraduates, and academic staff, but also as a powerful platform for scientific research, the exploration of advanced technologies, and the development of new textile materials. She emphasised that the establishment of the laboratory is another joint initiative between the university and the business community, aimed at creating new opportunities and supporting the growth of the light industry in Ukraine.

The opening of the laboratory is a logical continuation of the traditions of KNUTD’s scientific schools, which have been shaping the University’s intellectual foundation for more than 95 years. The “Textile Materials Finishing” laboratory is part of the scientific school “Dyeing of Textile Materials with Dyes Formed on Fibres”, founded by Oleh Romankevych, Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor, and laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology. Today, its traditions are being carried forward by Olha Haranina and Yana Redko.
The main areas of the laboratory’s activity include:
Scientific results of the state project “Development of Technologies for Finishing Textile Materials for the Individual Protection of Military Personnel”
The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art scientific instruments from leading global manufacturers, enabling high-precision research into the structure, colour, and physicochemical properties of textile materials. An important aspect of the laboratory’s work is its international collaboration with the Leibniz Institute for Composite Materials at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (Germany) in developing textile materials with specified functional properties.
The opening of the TRL “Finishing of Textile Materials” became possible thanks to the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the administration of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, and the staff of the Department of Fashion Technology. This event represents a significant contribution to the development of KNUTD’s scientific infrastructure, the implementation of strategic directions in innovative education, the advancement of the light industry, and Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
Hopefully, the new laboratory will become a space for creativity, scientific discovery, and professional growth for young researchers, lecturers, and students of the University!
