The Faculty of Design of the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design traditionally takes an active part in the Ukrainian Design and Innovations Week, organizing its own events that expand the horizons of modern design thinking.

On October 3, 2025, within the framework of the Design Week at KNUTD, a lecture by Oleksandra Shmelova-Nesterenko, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor of the Department of Interior and Furniture Design at KNUTD, was held on the topic “Modern Higher Education Institutions of the Artistic Direction: Environmental Design, Trends, Challenges”.

The event brought together many participants – teachers and students of KNUTD, as well as participants of the Ukrainian Design and Innovation Week, as well as representatives of other higher education institutions of Ukraine. The lecture was held in an online format, which did not prevent the event from being interesting and atmospheric.

During the lecture, the audience had the opportunity to get acquainted with both the latest global trends in the design of the environment of higher education institutions of the artistic direction, and the main problems of this industry in Ukraine. Associate Professor Oleksandra Shmelova-Nesterenko told what prerequisites are necessary for the formation of the educational environment of higher education institutions and what main factors influence the design of the environment.

Particularly useful was the information about the modern functional model of the educational space of higher education institutions of the arts and how it can be adapted to Ukrainian realities, especially during the future post-war reconstruction of our country.

The lecture also showcased a number of implemented foreign projects that demonstrate the latest trends in the design of the environment of the higher education institutions under discussion.
