GRAND OPENING OF THE EXPANDED TRAINING AND RESEARCH LABORATORY OF PHOTONIC NANOMATERIAL SYSTEMS

On 8 December 2025, the Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics held a grand opening of its training and research laboratory. Symbolically cutting the ribbon, Acting Rector Oleksandra Olshanska opened a new space for research activities for teachers and students.

The newly opened laboratory became the second stage of the previously established Laboratory of Heterogeneous Structures with Nanoparticles and was given an expanded name – the Training and Research Laboratory of Photonic Nanomaterial Systems. All members of the Rectorate of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design were invited to the opening ceremony.

The new laboratory was presented by Iryna Oleinikova, Head of the Department of Applied Physics and Higher Mathematics, who outlined the history of the laboratory’s research activities and highlighted its key achievements. Guests were introduced to the full range of the laboratory’s capabilities, as well as to its future development prospects. Following the launch of the educational programme “Nano- and Microtechnologies in Design”, there arose a need to equip certain educational components with new instrumentation. This, in turn, led to the creation of a specialised stand featuring light sources of varying power and spectral composition, designed to study the effects of light on material properties, with particular emphasis on nanocoatings.

Thanks to budgetary funding allocated for research into the protective properties of metamaterials and composite materials, new equipment was acquired and used to conduct studies on basalt- and carbon-based composites. In addition to faculty members, students of Group BNT were actively involved in the research activities.

In her speech, Oleksandra Olshanska highly praised the efforts of the Department’s faculty and staff in creating a centre for creative and scientific activity under challenging conditions.

The Vice-Rector for Research and International Cooperation, Liudmyla Hanushchak-Yefimenko, expressed her support for the Department’s research activities and highlighted the students’ ongoing participation in start-up competitions, emphasising their high potential.

Ihor Panasiuk, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, thanked the other university faculties for their continued support in implementing the Department’s scientific and educational initiatives and expressed hope for the further development of inter-faculty cooperation.

At the conclusion of the event, Iryna Oleinikova spoke about the contribution of students from various specialities to the creation of the laboratory. In particular, students from the BEM groups developed and implemented the light stand project, while students from the BNT groups were responsible for the laboratory’s design and atmosphere, giving new life to previously used objects.

The opening of the laboratory was a new step in the development of the Department’s research activities and demonstrated its support by the deans of other faculties.
