SURREALISM AND THE THEATER OF THE ABSURD: CREATIVE EXAMINATION OF THE GRADUATING CLASS OF KNUTD

On December 16, 2025, fourth-year students (group BAMP1-22) majoring in 026 Performing Arts at the Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design presented their new creative work to the audience – a show-exam called “Let's Play Absurd.” This was an important final stage of training, dedicated to the study of extraordinary forms of theatrical expression.

The visual and content of the performance were inspired by the genius of surrealism, Salvador Dali, whose image accompanied the actors throughout the entire performance. The students' work was guided by the artistic director, associate professor of the department V.V. Dovzhenko, and senior lecturer of the department A.V. Atamanyuk. Under the guidance of their mentors, the students immersed themselves in the complex world of the theater of the absurd. The audience saw the skillful transformation of young actors who, with the help of symbolic makeup, eccentric costumes, and refined plasticity, created surrealistic images. From classic “Dali” mustaches to grotesque characters in hats and masks, every element on stage worked to reveal the philosophy of the absurd. The exam program covered iconic works of world absurd drama by authors such as Samuel Beckett, Eugene Ionesco, Tom Sopard, and Slawomir Mrozek.

The excerpts presented were a real challenge for the graduating class: the actors managed to maintain a fine line between absurdity and deep meaning, demonstrating a high level of professional training. The young artists demonstrated free command of the stage space and deep emotional interaction with the audience.

The head of the Department of Performing Arts and Culture, Vira Burnazova, noted the courage and creativity of the graduates. She emphasized that working with such a complex genre demonstrates the high intellectual and artistic level of future actors, and that the department will continue to support such creative experiments. This was confirmed by the dean of the Faculty of Culture and Creative Industries, Iryna Trusova, who also joined in the congratulatory remarks to express her admiration for what she had seen.

The graduates still have many stage challenges ahead of them, but this performance proved once again that our students are ready for professional theater life!
