OPEN GUEST LECTURE ON BRITISH DIALECTS FOR STUDENTS OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM “ENGLISH LANGUAGE: TRANSLATION IN BUSINESS COMMUNICATION”

On March 23, 2026, an open guest lecture titled “Accents, dialects, and identities: the voice of Britain” was held for students pursuing a degree in the B11 “Philology” major of the “English Language: Translation in Business Communication” educational program at KNUTD.

The lecturer – Iryna Shkola, Ph.D. in Philology, Associate Professor, and Head of the Department of Foreign Languages and Teaching Methods at Berdiansk State Pedagogical University – introduced the audience to the diversity of British dialects and accents.

The lecture provided a detailed examination of the influence of historical processes on the formation of regional variants of the English language in Great Britain, with particular emphasis on the differences between northern and southern dialects. Students learned about the specific pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammatical features that can vary significantly depending on the region.

Particular interest was sparked by a comparison of dialects such as Cockney, Scots, and Yorkshire, accompanied by numerous examples of spoken language. This facilitated a better understanding of theoretical concepts and allowed participants to experience the authenticity of these linguistic variants.

Special attention was paid to the social factors of speech: participants discussed how dialects can reflect not only geographical origin but also the speaker’s social status.

The lecture was conducted in an interactive format and sparked a lively discussion among the students. The event helped deepen students’ understanding of linguistic variation in the English language and increased their interest in intercultural communication.

The Department of Philology and Translation sincerely thanks I.V. Shkola for the informative and timely lecture and looks forward to further collaboration.
