MEETING WITH STAKEHOLDERS ON THE REVISION OF THE EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMME "ENGLISH LANGUAGE: TRANSLATION IN BUSINESS COMMUNICATION"

On June 15, 2026, the Department of Philology and Translation of the Faculty of Culture and Creative Industries at Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design held a focus group meeting to discuss the Educational and Professional Programme “English Language: Translation in Business Communication” for the speciality B11 Philology, first (Bachelor’s) level of higher education.

The event brought together representatives of the university administration, the programme working group and quality assurance group, academic staff of the department, students, as well as representatives of the academic community and employers.

Invited stakeholders and representatives of the academic community included:

  • Yakiv Bystrov, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of English Philology, Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University;
  • Roksolana Povorozniuk, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Theory and Practice of Translation from English, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv;
  • Oleksandr Rebrii, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Head of Mykola Lukash Translation Studies Department of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University;
  • Yuliia Zaichenko, practising translator at PJSC “Impulse” Research and Production Association;
  • Artem Poluliakhov, practising translator, Head of the Translation Bureau “Il Gatto” (Kyiv).

During the meeting, the participants discussed the recommendations of the Expert Group and the Sectoral Expert Council concerning the improvement of the educational programme. The participants supported the need for a comprehensive revision of both the structure and content of the training of future translators.

As a result of the discussion, the stakeholders and representatives of the academic community proposed the following:

Strengthening literary studies training

  • introducing the educational components “Introduction to Literary Studies” and “Theory of Literature”;
  • introducing a course paper in Literary Studies;
  • renaming the discipline “History of Ukrainian Literature” to “Ukrainian Literature and Folklore”;
  • including a separate folklore module in the discipline “Ukrainian and Foreign Culture”.

Strengthening the linguistics block

  • introducing the discipline “General Linguistics”, which will provide fundamental linguistic training for future translators.

Strengthening translation studies training

  • introducing the disciplines “General Theory of Translation”, “Editing of Translated Texts”, and “Specialised Translation”;
  • moving the translation-oriented block of disciplines to the first year of study to ensure continuous professional training throughout the entire period of education;
  • updating the structural and logical framework of the educational programme.

Special attention was paid to the practical training of students. Representatives of the translation community emphasised the importance of developing competencies in translation editing, post-editing of machine translation output, translation quality assurance, and the use of modern digital technologies in translation activities.

Following the discussion, the focus group participants unanimously supported the proposed changes and recommended that the working group revise the Educational and Professional Programme “English Language: Translation in Business Communication” in accordance with the recommendations of the Sectoral Expert Council, stakeholders, and representatives of the academic community.
