The Fulbright Faculty Development Program targets teaching faculty and scholars under the age of 35 who are either teaching at institutions of higher learning or are affiliated with academic, research, or cultural institutions, including libraries and museums, or with NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations).

Fulbright Faculty Development grants are available in the following fields:

• Art
• Biological Sciences
• Chemistry
• Computer Science
• Economics
• Engineering
• Information Sciences
• Law
• Library Science
• Mathematics
• Philosophy
• Physics

Eligibility:

• 35 years of age or under at the time of application
• at least two years full or part-time teaching experience
• completion of the Kandidat degree is not required
• if the Kandidat degree has already been received, it must have been awarded no more than 3 years before the application deadline to the Fulbright Faculty Development program
• affiliation with an academic institution (university or institute) or professional staff member of a cultural institution such as a museum, library or archive, cultural/historical preservation agency, or other research institute, etc.
• at least five years since last participation in Fulbright Academic Exchange programs

***You or an immediate family member are not an employee of the US Embassy, Fulbright Program, or other US mission in Ukraine supported by the US Department of State.

****This restriction applies for one year following termination of employment.

Terms of the Fulbright Faculty Development Program

• Support for the individual scholar but not for families/dependents
• Maximum period of 10 months
• Course work for credit is not envisaged, although auditing of courses is encouraged
• Projects that will result in new courses or in the introduction of new methods or approaches in professional settings are particularly encouraged

How to Apply:

By May 16, 2009 the candidate must submit:

• The completed application form (including Research Objectives and a narrative Personal Statement)
• 3 letters of recommendation
• curriculum vitae (CV)
• a copy of your diploma (for all degrees achieved)

Applications can be downloaded or requested by e-mail from [email protected]. All documents must be submitted in English. The letters should be written in English if possible. If they are not, an original English translation must be provided. Copies of your certified academic documents (from each university or post-secondary institution attended, all your diplomas or certificates) should be in Ukrainian.

Criteria of Review

In reviewing Fulbright proposals that are submitted by eligible candidates, the following elements will be stressed:

• Evidence of appropriate scholarly achievement
• Demonstrated commitment to research, teaching, curriculum development, and expansion of course contents
• Likelihood of implementation of new methods or approaches in the professional setting
• Likelihood of immediate continuation of academic or professional work
• Potential for active cooperation with US and Ukrainian colleagues in projects that could have a major impact on Ukrainian educational and scientific policy and practice
• Evidence of community commitment in and outside academia

Selection Process:

The selection process will consider the candidate's professional achievements, feasibility of the proposed project, and benefits of the project to the grantee's field and to its continued development and/or impact in Ukraine.

• First screening of applications is done by the Fulbright Program in Ukraine. Applications are reviewed for completeness and candidate eligibility.
• American and Ukrainian area experts review approved applications and recommend semi-finalists (May-June).
• Semi-finalists are invited to an interview conducted in English before a selection committee composed of U.S. and Ukrainian scholars and officials (August).
• The selection committee recommends finalists and alternates to the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for final decision. The Institute of International Education will assist in determining the hosting U.S. University.
• The Fulbright finalists will be approved by the Board of Fulbright Supervisors (BFS). Placements at U.S. universities will be finalized by April 2010.

Finalists are required to pass satisfactorily the TOEFL iBT Test (Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language). The Fulbright Office in Kyiv will make all testing arrangements and cover all costs of the application, selection, and testing process (travel to and stay in Kyiv, exam fees, etc.).
