About the Department
History

1930 – establishment of the university and creation of the Department of Enterprise Economics – during this period, the following departments were created within the structure of the university's Faculty of Engineering and Economics: ‘General Economics and Accounting’ (headed by Prof. B.O. Chornyi), ‘Planning’ (headed by Prof. M.A. Shchelonin) and ‘Labour Economics’ (headed by Prof. A.M. Gornostai-Podolskyi). On the basis of these departments, the Department of Applied Economics and Planning was organised (headed in different years by Prof. M.A. Shchelonin and Prof. S.I. Podgaets). Throughout the history of the university, the department's work was carried out in accordance with the country's economic needs for highly qualified economists with in-depth knowledge of the specifics of production and was accompanied by the opening of new specialities.

In 1940, the department was reorganised into two departments: ‘Economics and Industrial Planning’ (headed by Prof. Y. L. Slavsky, later S. I. Podgaets) and ‘Production Organisation and Planning’ (headed by Prof. L. E. Gorelik).

1945 – after the Institute returned from evacuation, the departments were again merged into the Department of Economics, Planning and Organisation (headed by Prof. L. E. Gorelik). From 1947 to 1953, the department was headed by G. Sh. Mesenzhnikov, and from 1953 to 1987 – by N. A. Adamova.

1965 – taking into account the industry's need to train graduates with more in-depth knowledge of production specifics, the department was divided into two departments: ‘Economics, Organisation and Planning of Leather, Footwear and Chemical Fibres’ (headed by Prof. G. P. Ispiryana) and ‘Economics, Organisation and Planning of Garment and Knitwear Production’ (headed by Prof. N. A. Adamova). From 1987 to 2002, the department was headed by M. V. Svischev.

In 2002, in connection with the opening of the speciality ‘Accounting and Auditing’, the department was renamed the Department of Economics, Accounting and Auditing (headed by Prof. A. P. Grechan).

2013 – as a result of the optimisation of the structure of the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Department of Enterprise Economics was formed (headed by Prof. V. V. Loiko).

2016 – taking into account global trends in the training of highly qualified personnel in the field of economics and business, the expansion of the range of specialities and specialisations for bachelor's and master's degrees, the department was renamed the Department of Business Economics. The department is headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor A. O. Melnyk. The department teaches the following disciplines for all specialities of the university: Fundamentals of Economic Theory, International Economics, International Economic Relations, Foreign Economic Activity, Business Planning, and others.

In 2018, due to the expansion of specialisation, the department was renamed the Department of Business Economics and Tourism.

2020 – due to the reorganisation of the university and the expansion of the list of educational programmes offered by the teaching staff, the department was renamed ‘Economics and Services’.

2021 – taking into account new trends in economic development, the department expanded its scientific and educational activities and was renamed ‘Smart Economics.’ The department was headed by Doctor of Economics, Professor A. A. Oleshko.

2025 – As a result of optimising the image and communication strategy, a strategically sound decision was made to return to the classic name ‘Department of Economics’, which meets the requirements of the regulatory framework of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, contributes to the optimisation of educational and scientific activities, expands opportunities for international cooperation and increases the competitiveness of KNUTD as a whole.
