About the Department
History of the Department

The department of Technogenic Safety, Heat and Mass Transfer Processes was created in accordance with the rector`s order on August 30, 2012 by combining the department of Technogenic Safety and the department of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes. In this regard the department has combined history of two departments, which are the successors of the departments of Theoretical and General Thermotechnics and Labour Protection.

Originally the department of Theoretical and General Thermotechnics was founded in 1931. Since then the department changed its name several times. In different years it was headed by outstanding chairs: P. Dushskiy (Assoc. Prof.), M. Pavlovych (Doctor of Engineering, Prof.), I. Neduzhyi (Assoc. Prof.), A. Tsaturiants (Doctor of Engineering, Prof.) and others.

In January 1966 the problem research laboratory of engineering thermophysics reporting to the department was created, today it is the problem research laboratory of resource and environmental management.

In different years prominent scientists worked at the department and the laboratory. They are Professor S. M. Konstantinov – the rector of the KTILI in 70-80 years, Professor, Doctor Dykyi – a vice-rector on scientific work in the 80-ies, academician of NAS of Ukraine, Doctor of Engineering, Professor A. A. Kremnev; Doctor of Physics and Mathematics Yu. T. Borschevsky, PhD, academician V.Kashtan and others.

The department of Labor Protection was founded in 1976. It became independent from the department of Machines and Apparatus of a Sewing-Knitting Production. The first head of the department was associate professor O. Shcherbakov from 1976 to 1979. Further, the department was renamed into the department of Health and Environment. It was headed by Doctor of Engineering Sciences, Professor Fedor Kucheriavyi from 1979 to 1982, then Doctor of Engineering, Professor Eduard Ryliev from 1982 to 1988. Associate professors Haydaychuk I., Vyun V, Hrabovskyi, A., Lukashevych H. worked at the department.

In 1988 the department of Heat Engineering and the department of Labor Protection and Environment were united into a single department of Thermal Engineering, Health and Environment. The department was headed by Professor, Doctor in Engineering Lutsik Rostyslav - honoured worker of public education, academician, a renowned expert in the field of material science and heat and mass transfer processes of production of consumer goods. The joint department existed from 1988 to 2005. In 2005, the department was divided into two parts – the department of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes and the department of Technogenic Safety.

The department of Heat and Mass Transfer Processes was headed by Professor, Doctor in Engineering Lutsik Rostyslav. After his death in 2007, Doctor in Engineering, Professor Zlotenko Borys became the head of the department.

Since 2005 the department of Technogenic Safety was headed by Doctor of Engineering, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine Panasiuk Ihor.

On August 30, 2012 the departments were united again into the department of Technogenic Safety, Heat and Mass Transfer Processes under the guidance of Doctor of Engineering, Professor, Academician of the Academy of Engineering Sciences of Ukraine Panasiuk Igor - the recognized specialist in the field of labour protection and environment in light and related industries.

In August 2018, in order to develop specialties in Heat Power Engineering and optimize the structure of the University, the department was included in the Educational and Scientific Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, and in September 2019 the department was headed by Oksana Romanyuk, PhD, Associate Professor.

Study Programmes

The department is general engineering. It isn`t a graduate chair. The department provides training for students of all faculties, all training areas and specialties.

Research

The teachers of the department conduct the planned research on the topics “Environmental protection and the creation of systems of human protection" and "Resource conservation and comprehensive utilization of light industry and chemistry waste” in accordance with the field of scientific activity of the University "Environmental protection and the establishment of systems for protection against harmful effects in industries" and "Resource-saving technologies and waste recycling in light industry of Ukraine " (supervisor Prof. Panasiuk I.). The department was involved in the space program "Buran - Enerhia', and is now actively working to fulfill the tasks of “The National program of environmental rehabilitation of the Dnipro river basin and improvement of drinking water quality".

The department performed a grant project (Ottawa, Canada) on implementation of the environmental management system at the enterprises of Ukraine (supervisor Prof. Lutsik R.)

In 2006-2007 the department was working on the theme "Promotion of sustainable development through the improvement of environmental management system at the enterprises of light industry of Ukraine" funded by the British Council in Ukraine and Europe Environment Division, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) (supervisors Prof. Lutsik R. W. and Professor I. Panasiuk).

In 2010-2011 the state budget theme "Study of the effectiveness of bank protection works on the Kakhovk reservoir" (supervisor Prof. I. Panasiuk) was carried out.

The department continues to perform applied state budget work on the topic "Study of the ecological status of rivers in the forest-steppe zone of Ukraine and development of measures for improving their water protection zones" (supervisor Prof. I. Panasiuk). In the research laboratory of resource and environmental management we work on the fundamental state budget theme "Physical-chemical basis for modification of biopolymers under the action of the electrochemically activated water systems in the production of leather and fur" (supervisor Prof. Zotenko B.). Since 2013 our employees have been performing applied research budget work on the theme "Innovative technology of the use of biologically active compounds and activated water in the production of leather and fur" (supervisor Professor Danylkovych A.).

The results of scientific-research works of the department are approved and implemented: at the enterprises of the Ministry of Light Industry of Russia (Ostashkov, Novosibirsk, Barnaul leather plants), in Ukraine (shoe factories, custom tailors); Cherkasy silk industrial complex, in the development of respiratory protection in the climatic conditions of the Arctic and Antarctic Regions, in the development of new enterosorbents that take the radionuclides from the human body; detergents for helicopters and protective clothing for the liquidators of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, in the development of systems of protection from high temperatures, intense radiant heat, toxic aerosols, in the manufacture of new insulating materials for pipes and aircraft in the system "Enerhia-Buran", in the manufacture of new fire-resistant materials for aircraft, the development of new filters of heat exchangers with irregular spiral nozzle, and new schemes of fuel systems for gas turbines and internal combustion engines, the implementation of the national program of environmental rehabilitation of the Dnipro basin from waste of light industry enterprises, the development of new energy saving environmentally friendly technologies in light and related industries.

The department has a long and fruitful contacts with industrial enterprises and research institutes in the field of environmental protection and safety at work. They are: the Research center of ecological monitoring and metropolis biodiversity of NAS of Ukraine, the Institute of water chemistry, bio-colloid chemistry of the NAS of Ukraine, the Ukrainian scientific-research institute of leather industry, the Ukrainian scientific-research institute of water and ecological problems, Closed joint stock company (CJSC) "Chinbar" and others.
