About the Department
History

In 2022, KNUTD established the Department of Digital Art, which aims to prepare students for success in the creative technology industry and provide a fundamental art education filled with modern technologies and an experimental spirit. The knowledge gained will help to create a comprehensive portfolio and lay the foundation for further development in digital production.

The Department's courses have been designed with links to the digital production industry in mind, making it possible to develop the fundamental skills and creative abilities that are the building blocks in creating a contemporary digital artist. Students will discover techniques and methods used in fine arts and design across a wide creative range of facilities. From academic drawing, human and animal anatomy, sketching, and understanding color and composition to digital painting, sculpting, digital design of characters, environments, and fantasy objects for various purposes.

The rapid growth of digital technologies is shaping new conditions for the existence of modern society, where virtual space is proving to be one of the most significant factors influencing the nature and quality of its development. The harmonious combination of aesthetic and technical components in the creation of visual content is achieved through the synthesis of artistic principles and the latest technological advances. Understanding of the modern worldview paradigm dictates the vectors of the Department's development, which helps to understand current trends and actively respond to requests in the field of art education.

Teaching Staff

Antonina DUBRIVNA, Head of the Department of Digital Art

PhD in Art Studies, Associate Professor, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, member of the Union of Designers of Ukraine, author of more than 75 scientific works in scientific professional editions on the study of art and cultural studies approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and included in the international scientific metrical bases (including Web of Science), and the scientific monograph "Abstraction as Phenomenon of Fine Arts of Ukraine" (2022), organizer of international cultural and art projects, permanent participant in international and all-Ukrainian art exhibitions. Her teaching experience spans 20 years and includes more than 15 academic courses taught to the students of the Departments of Drawing and Painting, Art History, Fine Arts and Graphic Design, and Visual Communication Design. Her research interests and practical experience are in non-subjective art practices of modern fine arts, processes of intercultural interaction in the conditions of globalization, the application of information and communication technologies in teaching art courses in the system of higher education, the formation of artistic image in traditional and digital art practice.

Olesia RYBCHENKO, Associate Professor, Doctor of Philosophy, member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, artist, art critic

The author of scientific articles investigating the problems of modern fine arts, a participant in more than 100 all-Ukrainian and international art competitions, exhibitions and other art projects.

Research interests: Ukrainian folk traditions, scenography and visual arts practices involving computer technology.

Education:

2002 – Academy of Municipal Administration.

 

Inga YERMAK, Associate Professor

She works in fine arts, digital art, sculptures, and design art. Her works are kept in Ukraine and abroad. She has a number of methodical developments and scientific publications on the problems of the introduction of digital technologies in the system of art education. Her research interests are digital art practices and design. 14 scientific works have been published.

Education:

2020 - Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, postgraduate studies;

2009 - National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.

 

Svitlana PASHUKOVA, senior lecturer

Works in easel painting and graphics. She has published 25 scientific works. Participant in exhibitions of international and national levels. Her works are kept in private collections in Ukraine and abroad. Her areas of practical and theoretical research are visual arts sketching and digital art.

2002 - National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.

 

Uliana BALAN, senior lecturer

Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Works in the field of easel painting,

graphics, and illustrations. Participant in exhibitions of international and national levels.

Her creative works are kept in private collections in Ukraine and abroad.

She has a number of published research papers.

Education:

2008 - National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, assistantship-internship.

2002 - National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture.

 

Mykola OSIPCHUK, senior lecturer

Member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. The field of activity is easel and monumental painting. Experimental work is conducted to find new forms of expression in painting, coloristics, the perception of color and its influence on the psychophysical state of a person is investigated. The author of the training manual "Drawing". His works of art are kept in private collections in Ukraine and abroad. 17 scientific works have been published. Participant of all-Ukrainian and international exhibitions, symposia and conferences.

Research interests: composition in fine art, color science, sketching, digital art.

Education:

1987 – Kyiv State Art Institute.

The Department of Digital Art has specialized classrooms to support the educational process and research:

In the laboratories and classrooms, students of the Department, led by experienced specialists in fine arts and digital art, put into practice knowledge of the scientific and practical principles of generating and implementing creative concepts in complex projects, improve their mastery of artistic techniques and methods, create a visual atmosphere for digital products, and acquire skills in shaping the style of the virtual world and its inhabitants.

Educational and Methodological Support

In accordance with the requirements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the current regulations of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, a curriculum for training specialists in contemporary fine arts has been developed and approved. In full compliance with the standards and regulatory requirements, working curricula of the courses have been developed. The Department of Digital Art is constantly improving its teachingmethodological and practical complexes; the curriculum provides for theoretical and practical training of students and determines the time for practice and qualification works. There are also master classes by famous Ukrainian and international artists, plein airs, and exhibitions.

The Department of Digital Art is one of the degree-granting departments of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design at the Institute of Culture and Creative Industries

Active study of the needs of consumers of educational products and understanding of the requirements of the labor market directed the team of educational program developers towards digital art. Digital art used to be called computer art or new media art created using software, computers, or other electronic devices. Anything created on digital media, such as animation, photographs, illustrations, videos, digital paintings, etc. can be classified as digital art. With the development of technology, more and more types of digital art appear. Nowadays, digital art has become a part of everyday life and has a strong influence on traditional visual arts. Compared to traditional art, the most important advantage of digital art is its convenience: digital art is easy to carry around on an electronic device, easy to distribute, easy to print, and, most importantly, easy to correct. Digital art also has an advantage over traditional art in terms of its economic value and potential revenue.

Scientific and Creative Activity

The academic staff of the Department conduct creative experimental work in the field of fine arts, the purpose of which is the research and development of innovative methods, techniques and approaches in teaching fine arts, which stimulates the creative growth of students, the evolution of their artistic thinking and the improvement of professional skills, as well as promotes the development contemporary art through experimentation and innovation.

Students

For the academic staff of the Department, an important task is to educate students with high professional and moral qualities, cultural level, creative thinking, active citizenship, and patriotism.

The Department's teachers introduce the most modern types of educational activities: online lectures, practical classes, art meetings, round tables, internships, tests, term papers, and diploma papers, as well as various types of practices in the field of fine arts. In parallel with the educational process, the Department's teachers organize excursions, plein airs, and visits to various art events.

Opportunities for Students

While studying at the Department of Digital Art, students acquire knowledge of the virtual design of an object, character, or environment in the genre of fiction and fantasy, study the fundamental components of fine arts, shape formation, color, composition, stylization, etc. Students get acquainted with achievements in the field of digital art and with modern methods of scientific research. In the process of teaching fundamental and professionally-oriented courses, modern teaching methods are actively used, taking into account the creative developments of well-known concept artists and illustrators, computer equipment and professional-oriented software are also used. Students of the Department receive knowledge both within the framework of University-wide cycles, and according to original programs of career-oriented courses, which are constantly modernized in order to meet international standards for the training of specialists in various areas of artistic activity. Future specialists, digital artists, can be involved in the creation of concept art for large projects. The acquired skills can be applied in various fields, namely in the creation of computer games and the film industry.

Student Clubs

The Department has a student scientific and creative club "SKETCHING CLUB" (head – S. Pashukova), whose activities are aimed at improving the professional skills of students and activating their creative potential.

The main goal of the student scientific and creative club is the formation of a system of applied skills and practical skills in the use of basic principles, approaches and methods of work in creating sketches, in accordance with the creative tasks.
