About the Department

The Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies was created by renaming the Department of Philosophy, Political Science and Ukrainian Studies by Order No. 229 "On the Organization of Educational Units of the University" dated August 31, 2021. The Department of Philosophy, Political Science and Ukrainian Studies was founded in July 2012 by merging three departments of the University (Philosophy and Cultural Studies; Political Science and Sociology and the Department of Ukrainian Studies). From 2012 to 2015, the Department was headed by A. A. Ilyina, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor, from 2015 to 2021 - A. V. Sakun, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor. From 2021 to 2023 - A. A. Ilyina, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor. Since May 2023, P. E. Herchanivska, Professor, Doctor of Cultural Studies, has been appointed the head of the Department.

The Department plays an exceptional role in the formation of modern specialists and socially responsible citizens with a high level of general culture, a spiritually rich outlook, developed political and legal consciousness, who recognize and appreciate the rule of law, democratic values and freedoms, understand the plurality of the modern multicultural world, think critically and systematically. The formation of such competencies takes place during teaching, awareness-raising and educational work by the scientific and pedagogical team of the Department.

The Department employs 4 scientific and pedagogical workers including 5 associate professors, 1 Doctor of Philosophy, 1 Candidate of Sociological Sciences, 1 Candidate of Historical Sciences, and 1 PhD Candidate, candidate of cultural sciences.

Polina HERCHANIVSKA, Doctor of Cultural Studies, Professor, Head of the Department

Graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture majoring in Art History. In 1999, she studied at Harvard University (USA). In 2003, she defended her dissertation on the topic "Transformation of the folk sacred architecture and painting of Maramoros in the 17th-18th centuries as a reflection of the dynamics of European culture" for the degree of Candidate of Philosophical Sciences in the specialty 17.00.01 - "Theory and History of Culture". In 2014, she defended her dissertation on the topic "Cultural and religious dimensions of Ukrainian folk culture" for the degree of Doctor of Cultural Studies, specialty 26.00.04 - "Ukrainian Culture".

Awarded with prizes:  laureate of the Prize of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine for the contribution of youth to the development of the state (2000); scholarship holder of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (2000–2001); laureate of the Award of the Head of the Kyiv City State Administration for active participation in scientific activities (1995); laureate of the Prize of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences (1995).

Scientific and organizational activities: head of the Subcommittee 034 "Culturology" of the Scientific and Methodological Commission for Humanities and Theology of the Higher Education Sector of the Scientific and Methodological Council of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine.

Scientific guidance of applicants: 2 winners defended their doctoral theses; candidate theses - 3 winners.

Participation in the attestation of scientific personnel: as the first opponent - 23; head of ad hoc committees ‒ 11.

Editorial activities: editor-in-chief of the specialized edition of the almanac "Culture and Modernity"; member of the editorial boards of specialized scientific publications: "Bulletin of the National Academy of Managers of Culture and Arts"; collection of scientific works "Ukrainian cultural studies", Ukrainian Culture studies (KNU named after Taras Shevchenko).

Research interests: cultural studies, theory and history of culture, religious studies.

Antonina ILYINA, Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor

In 1998, she graduated from Kyiv State Institute of Theater Arts named after I. K. Karpenko-Kary, majoring in "Theatre Studies". In 2003, she defended her PhD thesis on the topic "Sociodynamics of consciousness in the dimensions of personal existence" in the specialty 09.00.03. - "Social philosophy and philosophy of history." She defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic "The potential of education in the transformations of the knowledge society" in the specialty 09.00.10 - "Philosophy of education".

Research interests: philosophy of education, genesis of culture.

Courses taught: "Philosophy of science and research methodology."

 

Fedir PRODANYUK, PhD in History, Associate Professor

In 1988, he graduated from the Faculty of History of Kyiv State University named after T. G. Shevchenko. In 1997, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic "Internal policy of the Ukrainian state (April 29 - December 14, 1918)".

He has been working at the University since 1988, and from 2006 to 2012, he was the deputy head of the Department of Ukrainian Studies.

Responsible for methodical work at the Department, performs the duties of the Department's secretary.

Research interests: The Ukrainian Revolution, the Ukrainian State of Hetman P. Skoropadskyi.

Courses taught: "Ukrainian and foreign culture", "History of ethnographic regions of Ukraine", "Ukrainian statehood: history and modernity", "Theory of culture" (content module II).

 

Ruslana MNOZHYNSKA, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor

In 1992, she graduated from Kyiv State University named after T. G. Shevchenko. In 2006, she defended her PhD thesis on the topic "Religious and philosophical views of S. Orikhovsky in the context of religious diversity in Ukraine (1st half of the 16th century)”. She has been working at KNUTD since 2006. Director of the Museum of the History of the University’s Development.

Research interests: history of philosophy, religious studies, ethics and aesthetics.

Courses taught: "Ukrainian and foreign culture", "Philosophy, political science, sociology", "Religious studies", "Ethics and aesthetics".

 

Daryna CHERNYAK, Candidate of Sociological Sciences, Associate Professor

She graduated from Kyiv National University named after T. G. Shevchenko, Faculty of Sociology and Psychology (2002). In 2006, she defended her PhD thesis on the specialty "Theory and History of Sociology" and obtained the scientific degree of Candidate of Sociological Sciences. On 01.07.2011, she was awarded the academic title of associate professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology. From 2005 to 2009, she worked at Kyiv Economic Institute of Management. From September 2007 to June 2009, she worked part-time at KNUTD as an associate professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology. From September 2009 to August 2012 - associate professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology of KNUTD. From August 2012 to the present, she is an associate professor of the Faculty of State University of Applied Sciences (FK). Advanced training: Lublin Science and Technology Park, Marie Curie-Skłodowska University. (Lublin, Republic of Poland, 2017). Kuyavian University (Wloclawek, Republic of Poland, 2019). Kuyavian University (Wloclawek, Republic of Poland, 2020). Baltic International Academy (Riga, Republic of Latvia, 2023), International Academy of Applied Sciences in Łomża (Poland, 2023).

Responsible for scientific work and research work of students of the Department, organization and conducting of scientific seminars of the Department, organizational and educational work of the Department, coverage of the results of the Department's activities on information stands, the website of the Department and social networks.

Research interests: state and problems of the higher education system of Ukraine, personal branding of the teacher.

Kateryna DANNYK, PhD in Culture Studies

She graduated from Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts in 2015 with a master's degree in Tourism. In 2019, after completing postgraduate studies at the same university, she successfully defended her dissertation on the topic "Ethno-cultural aspects of the activity of the Armenian minority in independent Ukraine (based on the materials of national and cultural societies)" and obtained the scientific degree of PhD in Culture Studies, in the direction of 26.00.01.

Research interests: ethnic culture, modern art, history of culture and arts, confessional and ethno-cultural features of the peoples of Ukraine, artistic culture, painting.

Courses taught: "Applied cultural studies", "Ukrainian and foreign culture", "Cultural studies of symbols", "Digital culture".

Research activities

The Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies makes a significant contribution to the scientific and innovative activities of the University.

A collective monograph "Processes of humanization and humanitarianization of education" was prepared within the framework of the scientific direction "Researching the problems of humanitarian sciences". Based on the results of the annual inter-departmental scientific seminar with the participation of students, postgraduates of KNUTD and the academic staff, collections of scientific works were published ("Research into problems of humanitarian education": collection of scientific works - Kyiv: KNUTD, 2018. - 210 p.; "Research into problems of humanitarian sciences": collection of scientific works. - Kyiv: KNUTD, 2019. - 156 p., "Research into problems of humanitarian sciences". - Kyiv: KNUTD, 2020. - 104 p.).

The academic staff of the Department implements best practices in working with young people, the Department maintains relations with leading scientific institutions, in particular the Institute of the Gifted Child of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, institutions of higher education in Ukraine and the European Union, teachers of the Department undergo internships abroad and at the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, publish the results of scientific research in collections of scientific works and professional journals, collective monographs, participate in scientific conferences of the all-Ukrainian and international level, publish the results of research abroad (Slovenia, Poland, Lithuania, Romania, Hungary).

The achievement of the Department was the participation in the competitive selection of scientific research projects, which will be carried out at the expense of the general fund of the state budget, with the projects "Assimilation of the value of success as a motivational basis of the life strategy of modern youth" (2019) and "Success as a value and motivational component of the life strategy representatives of the Internet Generation and the priority policy of the knowledge society" (2020).  

The Department prepares graduate students and researchers of all profiles to take an exam in philosophy of science and research methodology.

The teachers of the Department constantly update educational and methodological literature for students of full-time, part-time and distance education, systematically develop educational and methodological complexes and electronic versions of educational courses.

The purpose of the educational program: training of specialists capable of solving complex specialized tasks and practical problems in the field of professional activity of a culturologist, which involves the application of theories and methods of cultural studies under the condition of comprehensive perception of traditional and innovative forms of visual art in view of its genesis, main aesthetic ideas, ideological principles, styles and personalities in the current art space, capable of organizing and developing cultural industries and management of cultural projects, excursion and museum-gallery activities, creative entrepreneurship in culture, the main purpose of which is the production, promotion and commercialization of works, services and activities of cultural and artistic direction or such that is connected with the cultural and historical heritage of mankind.

The standard of higher education of Ukraine of the first (bachelor’s) level of the field of knowledge 03 - "Humanities", specialty 034 - "Cultural Studies". Approved and put into effect by the Order of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Ukraine dated June 16, 2020 No. 801

According to Order No. 171 dated 06/05/2023, the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies has established the training of higher education seekers in the specialty 028 "Management of Socio-Cultural Activities" of the educational program of the first (bachelor's) level of higher education "Management of Social and Cultural Activities". Guarantor of the educational program: A.A. Ilyina, Associate Professor, Doctor of Philosophy.

The purpose of the educational program: training of specialists who have deep knowledge, as well as basic and professional competencies in culture and art, aimed at ensuring personal development and professional training of specialists in the management of social and cultural activities.

The main goals of the program are: training specialists capable of solving complex specialized tasks and practical problems in the socio-cultural sphere, in the sphere of education and science, creative economy and cultural practices, which involves the application of theories and methods of cultural management and is characterized by the complexity and uncertainty of conditions.

Employment prospects of graduates

Graduates of the Department can be employed at enterprises, organizations and institutions operating in the field of culture, namely: research, educational, art institutions, cultural and creative industries, event agencies, state authorities, and media.

Positions that graduates can hold: event manager, art curator of multimedia projects and exhibitions, art director, manager of socio-cultural activities, manager of corporate culture, advertising manager, expert consultant in mass media, publishing houses, PR agencies, expert/critic of cinema, music, theater and fashion, teacher-organizer of cultural leisure, consultant in cultural institutions, state institutions, public organizations engaged in the management of culture and protection of historical and cultural monuments, tour guide.

The Department contributes to the development of higher education seekers' ideas about the fateful events and tragic pages in the history of the Ukrainian people, the formation of a sense of national dignity, patriotism, tolerance, the search for a common platform for solving global socio-cultural transformations, the dissemination of socio-humanitarian knowledge and new scientific ideas, the cultivation of love for the native land, the preservation traditions, customs, rites, spiritual culture of the Ukrainian people.

A healthy lifestyle and positive thinking that help overcome life's difficulties, nurturing aesthetic feelings, forming judgments, the ability to understand and appreciate works of art, the development of artistic taste, creative imagination, creativity, increasing the level of artistic and aesthetic education are important components of the educational work of the Department.

It is worth mentioning the events organized by the Department: Shevchenko Days, Skovoroda trainings "Know Yourself", commemoration of significant and memorable dates: the Day of the Unity of Ukraine, commemoration of those who died during the Second World War, the Holodomor of 1932-1933, the Chernobyl tragedy, the liberation of Ukraine from the fascist-German invaders, the Revolution of Dignity, the Day of the Constitution of Ukraine; holding creative contests and art projects for Vyshyvanka Day, Easter and Christmas holidays.

The Department contributes to the formation of students' aesthetic tastes, a sense of beauty (as an example, the following activities can be named: master classes on making a Motanka doll, pysanka, literary evenings as part of the International Poetry Day), an idea of the role of the family and family values, which are supported and consolidated as part of the preparation and celebration of International Mother's Day and International Family Day.

In order to learn about the history and culture of Ukraine and the world, the teachers of the Department initiate local history quizzes, photo exhibitions of student works "Everyone has his own side", "The world is quiet, the land is sweet, My Ukraine...", visits to museums of Kyiv and Ukraine, creation of animated presentations by students - virtual excursions to national and world museums.

The teachers of the Department actively involve young people in scientific life and independent research. Under the guidance of teachers of the Department, students prepare reports for international and all-Ukrainian conferences, round tables and scientific seminars of the internal level.

In 2020, 4 articles and 42 theses of students were published, in 2021 – 1 article and 32 theses were published.

  

 

 

Student scientific clubs

The identification of creatively gifted youth and the development of their potential are facilitated by scientific clubs operating at the Department, namely: "Philosophical problems of modernity", "Patriot", "Kalokagathia", "Indigo".

Students are also involved in the development of startups. Thus, as part of the All-Ukrainian Conference of Higher Education Graduates and Young Scientists "Innovation in education, science and business: challenges and opportunities", startups "With Ukraine in the heart" were prepared (Chernyak D., Mnozhynska R., Bivalkevych E., 2020) , "Modern humanitarian space" (Chernyak D., Kadlubovych T., Stadnik D., 2020), "Using the visualization method in doing the course "Philosophy, political science and sociology" (Chernyak D., Kadlubovych T., Gluzd V., 2021), "Ukraine cult" (D. Chernyak, E. Bivalkevych, Karina M., 2022), "Transformer audience" (D. S. Chernyak, P. Kvyatkovska, M. Skrypnyk, Karina M.).

The Department works with students of all specialties at all faculties and can be proud of graduates who studied at KNUTD and work to increase the authority and success of the University and Ukraine.

International Cooperation

The Department actively cooperates with humanitarian departments of leading educational institutions of Ukraine and Europe. Teachers participate in conferences, trainings, scientific and methodical seminars of interuniversity and international level held in Ukraine and abroad.

KNUTD History Museum

The History Museum of Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design is subordinated to the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies.

The museum is more than 50 years old. Its current task is a multinarrative approach in interdisciplinary communication of all the faculties and promotion of the University achievements.

The exhibition hall of the museum is located in the 1st building of the University, on the 3rd floor.

The director of the museum is Ruslana Mnozhynska, Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies.

Over the years of its existence, the museum has become a place of concentration of information about the more than 90-year history of the University, about the scientific and pedagogical activities of the teaching staff, the lives of many who shaped its history and international image. The history of the University, with which their biography is now linked, is presented in photographs, documents, artifacts and books.

For first-year students of all the faculties, familiarization tours are held at the beginning of the academic year.

In the context of the request of modern society, in order to promote and distribute the professional achievements of the University's scientists, as well as educational career guidance work among students, the museum conducts "Open Door Days". More than 400 students of Kyiv schools and gymnasiums, students of the College of Arts and Design of KNUTD, as well as foreign students visit them every year.

One of the directions of the educational work of the museum is the organization of exhibitions. These are personal art exhibitions of the University teachers' and students' works, as well as faculty-wide exhibitions.

Exhibitions dedicated to the glorious dates of Ukraine, which contribute to the national-patriotic education of students, are held in a new format. The exhibition of works dedicated to a certain date or honoring personalities is combined with student dramatizations and musical accompaniment.

The KNUTD History Museum is a kaleidoscope of various exhibitions and it strives to communicate with visitors and be a cultural provider of diverse university content.
