The Cluster's activities are carried out in accordance with the Kyiv City Development Strategy until 2025, which was signed on 22 December, 2015. Cooperation agreements between the executive body of the Kyiv City Council (Kyiv City State Administration), Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design, Lviv University of Trade and Economics and light industry enterprises. The subject of the Agreement is the formation of an educational investment and technology cluster of light industry as a tool for innovative development through the effective use of available potential and resources.
Today, the Educational Investment and Technology Cluster of Light Industry in Kyiv has developments in design and manufacturing of functional knitted fabrics to protect against mechanical damage (friction, cuts, punctures, abrasion, tearing, cold and firearms), open flames or intense heat flow, with antibacterial properties and deodorizing effect; construction of a polymer composite material capable of effective reflection and absorption of electromagnetic waves, etc.
Most light industry enterprises have long-term partnerships with the EU manufacturers, supplying high-quality products to the European market. Given the experience of business relations, it can be argued that in the context of signing the Association Agreement with the EU, Ukrainian enterprises will quickly adjust to work in the context of in-depth European integration. In the future, the light industry may become a kind of experimental platform for introducing innovations, both through the transfer of foreign technologies and the implementation of domestic developments, which is very important for a number of industries, including the military-industrial complex.
The full-scale war started by russia is undoubtedly causing huge losses in all sectors of the Ukrainian economy: a significant decrease in demand for goods and services, lack of financing, logistical problems, shortage of labor and necessary specialists, etc.
Among the promising areas for the recovery of Ukraine's economy and the reconstruction of the state, according to the results of the survey conducted by the "Rating" group, education, science and light industry are highlighted.
According to the Ukrainian Association of Light Industry Enterprises, at the end of 2023, 19,700 manufacturers of clothing, footwear, textiles and leather goods were registered in Ukraine, with Kyiv leading in terms of the largest number of registered manufacturers of light industry products (14%). In 2023, the industry's revenue decreased by 13%. But, despite the full-scale war, which led to a decrease in the industry's income, new promising areas, which are in demand both in the domestic market and are export-oriented, are emerging in Ukraine. These include the manufacture of military products and uniforms for law enforcement agencies.
Best practices in urban economic development include the creation of clusters as centers of competence in priority sectors. The Educational Investment and Technology Cluster of Light Industry in Kyiv should become an effective tool for postwar reconstruction.
“The Cluster of Light Industry is the partnership between Science, Business and Government. Our community is the first in the capital. We are singing in its effectiveness”. Ivan Gryshchenko, Deputy Chairman of the Cluster Council, |
“Kyiv should return to the glory of an industrial city”. Coordinator of the Light Industry Cluster Council, Viktor Lishchuk |
“We are manufacturers who implement the achievements of scientific and technological progress. Today, close cooperation between science, education, business and government is needed”. Member of the Light Industry Cluster Council, Hennadiy Kosmina |
“The value of the KNUTD initiative is also in the fact that it has united those who want and know how to work. In this case, the situation is when innovation not only protects the freedom of workers, but also gives them strength”. Member of the Light Industry Cluster Council, Liudmyla Ivanova |
